Zinfandel wine is one of the truly "American" wine sensations in the marketplace. Nowhere else in the world is the Zinfandel grape grown so extensively and with such success. And to narrow it down even further, the Zinfandel grape, which makes both Red Zinfandel and White Zinfandel wines, is grown primarily in California.
Red Zinfandel wine is typically bold in flavor, with a rich, lush texture, and typically high alcohol content. Among other things, Zinfandel pairs perfectly with barbecue (another American tradition).

VN94+94+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Geyserville hits the palate with a burst of dark red/purplish fruit, sweet spice, lavender, chocolate, dried herbs and American oak. I would be in no rush to open the 2021, as it is clearly an infant at this stage. The blend is 76% Zinfandel, 16% Carignane, 6% Petite Syrah and 2% Alicante Bouschet. The 2021 is a powerhouse, that much is pretty clear. (Antonio Galloni)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023 Tightly focused and briary, this blend offers density without weight. Presents plum and blueberry flavors accented by dill and green peppercorn as this builds tension toward medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. Drink now through 2032. 9,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022 Loads of earth and smoked meat aromas kick off the nose of this bottling from a historic property, with smashed berry, plum and anise notes also arising. There’s solid tension to the palate, where strawberry compote, peppercorn and dried pork flavors align. (Matt Kettmann)SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2022 Appealingly old-school, with sturdy blackberry, licorice and briar patch accents that race toward zesty tannins. Drink now through 2030. 3,600 cases made. (Tim Fish)VN8989 pts. - Vinous - May 2022 The 2020 Zinfandel Paso Robles, the second selection from Benito Dusi, is nicely done. It offers up an array of dark fruit, orange peel, coffee and exotic spice, all in a nervy, mid-weight style that is quite attractive. The Paso Zinfandel is not as plush as it can be, but that’s the vintage. Picked early? (Antonio Galloni)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023 Captures the best of Paso Robles Zinfandel, deeply structured and appealingly briary, with notes of bright cherry, brown baking spices and orange peel that finish with fleshy tannins. Drink now through 2032. 4,800 cases made. (Tim Fish)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2023 A briar patch in a glass, this zesty red shows spirited blackberry, grilled anise and green peppercorn flavors as it builds richness toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2032. 7,185 cases made. (Tim Fish)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th May 2023 Rombauer’s 2020 Zinfandel is 87% Sierra Foothills, with the remainder of the fruit coming from Napa and Lake Counties; approximately half the fruit is from the family’s own vineyards. Aged primarily in older wood (less than 10% new oak), it’s a full-bodied, fruit-forward effort, marked by blackberries and mulberries. Gentle earth and briar notions bring just a bit of complexity to the table, while the texture is plush and ripe, the finish softly dusty and long. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2022 Zesty, bold and fruity, offering raspberry and spice flavors, with a hint of mint as this finishes on a plump and briary accent. Drink now through 2029. 46,700 cases made. (Tim Fish)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2023 Jammed with fresh, lively fruit, this Zinfandel abounds with black raspberry, spice and orange zest accents that linger on the long, supple finish. Drink now through 2032. 11,300 cases made. (Tim Fish)VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Zinfandel Juvenile, Turley’s young vines bottling, is terrific. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, mocha, chocolate, tobacco and dried herbs give the Juvenile tons of flavor intensity to fill out its plush contours. This racy Zinfandel is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Best of all, it will be easy on the budget, too. (Antonio Galloni)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard is superb. In most vintages, the Kirschenmann can be a bit light, but in 2021 it offers a beguiling mix of its typical floral qualities, but with an extra kick of depth that holds everything together so well. Bright red berry fruit, rose petal, chalk, min and white pepper are some of the many notes that grace this striking Lodi Zinfandel from Turley. (Antonio Galloni)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard is packed with dark fruit, candied plum, spice, lavender and leather. This opulent, flamboyant Paso Robles Zinfandel from vines planted in 1923 is a wine of extremes. Jammy, opulent fruit and searing acids are all dialed up. Then again, that is Paso. (Antonio Galloni)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 The 2018 Zinfandel Kirschenmann is a perfect example of what makes this vintage so appealing. Always a lighter, rather perfumed wine, the Kirschenmann has striking mid-palate sweetness and depth, both of which round the wine out beautifully. Ripe blueberry, mint and spice notes all run through this racy, expressive Zinfandel.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2019 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard is the finest wine I have tasted off this site yet. Effusive in its aromatics, with striking red berry fruit and gorgeous purity, the Kirschenmann shows the elegance that is possible in Lodi. All the elements come together effortlessly in the glass. The 2019 is such a classy wine.RP92+92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th Feb 2021 The medium ruby colored 2019 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard opens with a bit of tarry reduction over a core of black fruits and spices. The palate is offering much more at this youthful stage. It’s packed with dark, spiced fruits and is medium-bodied, soft and fresh with an earthy finish. It has great potential and just needs more time in bottle. 1,220 cases produced.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard is absolutely gorgeous. Bright, intensely aromatic and light on its feet, the 2020 is immediately appealing, right out of the gate. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, red flowers and cedar lend aromatic intensity. This is an especially perfumed, gracious Zinfandel, even in 2020. (Antonio Galloni)
