Zinfandel wine is one of the truly "American" wine sensations in the marketplace. Nowhere else in the world is the Zinfandel grape grown so extensively and with such success. And to narrow it down even further, the Zinfandel grape, which makes both Red Zinfandel and White Zinfandel wines, is grown primarily in California.
Red Zinfandel wine is typically bold in flavor, with a rich, lush texture, and typically high alcohol content. Among other things, Zinfandel pairs perfectly with barbecue (another American tradition).

VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Zinfandel Esola Vineyard is one of the highlights in this range from Bedrock. It opens with fabulous aromatics that are so vivid and so inviting. Sweet red berry fruit, pipe tobacco, cedar, sage and earthy accents lend striking nuance throughout. This is so seriously impressive.
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - June 5, 2018 The 2016 Zinfandel Angeli (96% Zinfandel, 2% Syrah, and 2% Petite Sirah) comes from Alexander Valley in the northern part of California. Its plum/purple color is followed by a rockingly good bouquet of spiced plums, cedar, sandalwood, and exotic spice. Medium to full-bodied, focused, elegant and seamless, with a silky texture, it’s very much in the style of the 2016 vintage. While already hard to resist, it should keep for 6–7 years. It’s a great value. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018 Marietta’s 2016 Zinfandel Angeli is plush, deep, dense and beautifully textured. Expressive floral and spice notes add lift and nuance to this fresh, impeccably balanced Zinfandel. The purity of the fruit here is striking.
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022 The 2020 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is ripe with fresh berries, raspberry preserve, and baking spice. Its gushy fruit up front gives way to a note of raspberry seed and refreshing lift on the finish. Drink 2023–2032. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is a charming, seductive wine. All the elements are so nicely balanced. Succulent red/purplish fruit, mint, blood orange, sage and rose petal lend quite a bit of immediacy, while silky tannins wrap it all together in style. The 2020 is an unusually restrained Papera, but its balance is beyond reproach. A few hours of aeration are hugely beneficial. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - May 21, 2020 From a site in the Russian River (mostly Papera Vineyard but 24% from Carlisle and 6% from Mancini), the 2018 Zinfandel Piner-Olivet Ranches sports a deep purple color as well as a pretty bouquet of spiced strawberries, blueberries, smoked earth, leafy herbs, candied orange, and violets. A juicy, elegant wine with medium to full body, bright acidity, and a seamless texture, drink this incredibly delicious Zinfandel over the coming 5–7 years or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN92+92–95 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020 One of the stars in this range, the 2018 Zinfandel Piner-Olivet Ranches is a blend of several vineyards that is meant to capture this specific district within the Russian River Valley. In 2018, those sites are Papera, Carlisle and Mancini, a combination that works brilliantly. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender and menthol flesh out effortlessly, with bright acids that punctuate the finish.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2017 The 2015 Zinfandel El Diablo is best described as a field blend planted with numerous red and white varieties. Exotic and intense, with ripeness pushed to the edge, the Diablo possesses superb depth. Inky dark cherry, menthol, lavender and rose petal nuances add to the wine’s distinctive personality.
VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2017 The 2015 Zinfandel Grist, from a rugged hillside site in Dry Creek, has plenty of character, but it also comes across as rustic and rough around the edges, especially in its tannin profile. There is no shortage of depth to the black cherry, plum and lavender flavors. It will be interesting to see if the winemaking team can coax a little more finesse from this site in future vintages.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa is a rich, heady wine. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, mint, tobacco and kirsch are nicely pushed forward. There’s good depth to the fruit, but also some aggressiveness in the tannin. Then again, that is 2020. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020 The 2018 Zinfandel Old Hill Vineyard is flat-out stunning. Deep, layered and super-expressive, the 2018 offers unreal complexity, much of which comes from the diversity of a field blend of about 14 varieties that includes good bits of Grenache, Mataro, Alicante and Carignane, among others. A wine of total understatement, the 2018 is not obvious, but it has so much going on for readers who can take some time with it. Old Hill is one of the most pedigreed sites in Sonoma Valley. Joel Peterson certainly got every bit of potential out of this fruit in 2018. What a wine!
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2019 Zinfandel Old Hill Ranch, from one of the very best sites in Sonoma Valley, is another highly attractive wine in this range. Sweet perfumed floral notes lift a core of red berry fruit, with hints of spice and earthiness that develop with a bit of time in the glass. In this range, it stands out for its striking texture and balance. Joel Peterson’s blocks at Old Hill contain a good bit of Grenache planted in the late 1880s, which no doubt contributes to the wine bright red fruit and floral profile. In any discussion of California wine, Old Hill is quite simply one of the most pedigreed sites in the entire state. It is a truly special place in every way.
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard is superb. In most vintages, the Kirschenmann can be a bit light, but in 2021 it offers a beguiling mix of its typical floral qualities, but with an extra kick of depth that holds everything together so well. Bright red berry fruit, rose petal, chalk, min and white pepper are some of the many notes that grace this striking Lodi Zinfandel from Turley. (Antonio Galloni)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard is packed with dark fruit, candied plum, spice, lavender and leather. This opulent, flamboyant Paso Robles Zinfandel from vines planted in 1923 is a wine of extremes. Jammy, opulent fruit and searing acids are all dialed up. Then again, that is Paso. (Antonio Galloni)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 The 2018 Zinfandel Kirschenmann is a perfect example of what makes this vintage so appealing. Always a lighter, rather perfumed wine, the Kirschenmann has striking mid-palate sweetness and depth, both of which round the wine out beautifully. Ripe blueberry, mint and spice notes all run through this racy, expressive Zinfandel.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard is absolutely gorgeous. Bright, intensely aromatic and light on its feet, the 2020 is immediately appealing, right out of the gate. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, red flowers and cedar lend aromatic intensity. This is an especially perfumed, gracious Zinfandel, even in 2020. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Zinfandel Steacey Ranch is packed with super-ripe blue/purplish fruit, lavender, cinnamon and dried flowers. It is one of the more overt, juicy wines in this range. Time in the glass brings out intense floral notes and a whole range of red berry Zinfandel fruit. This is nicely done. (Antonio Galloni)
