VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2023 The 2021 Albana Vigna Rocca has a pretty white-golden color. Freshly sliced pear, dusty dried flowers and sweet smoke lift from the glass. A pleasant inner sweetness greets the senses, quickly followed by a contrasting burst of sour citrus and bright acids, yet the style remains understated and elegant throughout. Hints of green melon mingle with a staining of saline minerals as the 2021 finishes lightly structured. This is very nicely done, like skin-contact wine on training wheels, and I mean that in the best possible way. It makes for a great introduction to the category. (Eric Guido)
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2019 Barolo Lazzarito continues a trend seen in recent years in which the focus has been more about finesse than raw power. Intense red fruit, iron, dried herbs, chalk, dried rose petal and white pepper all run through this deep, virile Barolo. The power and intensity of Serralunga really come alive on the heady, explosive finish. Bright saline notes linger on the deep, resonant finish. A Barolo of raw, unbridled power, the Lazzarito demands patience. (Antonio Galloni)JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 Another pale ruby Barolo, the 2019 Barolo Lazzarito is from a 2.5-hectare parcel of the cru and reveals a hint of purple flowers, with a mix of red and blue fruit berries. It has more expansiveness on the palate, with more broadness, although it is not weighted. It offers a light balsamic tone, with rosemary and fresh herbs, and is persistent on the long finish. This will benefit from more time in bottle and drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)
VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2019 Barolo Ravera is the most intensely mineral and saline of the Barolos. Crushed rocks, white pepper, flowers, orange zest, red berry fruit and bright acids all run through this finely sculpted, chiseled Barolo. Readers who enjoy Barolos of energy and tension will adore the Ravera. I have always had a soft spot for this Barolo. The 2019 is another magnificent dimension of Vietti’s dark horse, a wine that over the last 10–12 years has routinely challenged for the crown here, and often won! (Antonio Galloni)JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 The 2019 Barolo Ravera is supple with aromas of licorice, raspberry liqueur, blood orange. It is medium to full-bodied, offering more citrus ripeness throughout, as well as notes of tea leaf and grenadine, fine tannins, and fresh acidity, without feeling austere. This is an adjacent property to Cogno’s prized section of Ravera Pernice. Drink 2024–2044. (Audrey Frick)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021 The 2018 Balifico, Volpaia’s Sangiovese/ Cabernet Sauvignon blend, is fabulous. Rich and inky, the 2018 offers up a compelling mélange of dark berry fruit, dark spice, licorice and espresso. I especially admire the wine’s textural richness. I imagine the 2018 will drink well for many, many years to come. In this tasting it is a total knock-out.SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021 Alluring violet, black currant and black cherry fruit introduces this seductive red, with firm, pointed tannins and vivid acidity providing structure as this glides to a lingering, detailed finish. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2037. 750 cases made, 200 cases imported.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021 Intense, this sweet style delivers honey, caramel, roasted almond and spice aromas and flavors, leaving a light layer of tannins on the tactile finish. Drink now through 2030. 350 cases made, 200 cases imported.VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021 The 2015 Vinsanto del Chianti Classico offers lovely density in an understated, mid-weight style that is quite appealing. Spice, orange peel, hazelnut, dried flowers and light caramel notes all grace this creamy Vin Santo from Volpaia. The 2015 is very nicely done.
