This is such a delicious wine.

Black cherry, lavender, truffle, mint, spice and new leather all develop in an ample, resonant Ghemme that hits all the right notes. A rich, substantial finish rounds things out in style. The 2013 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, but it also has the pedigree to develop in the cellar for many years to come. Each time I come back to the 2013 it is more impressive.

Rose petal, mint, violets, sweet red cherries and licorice are some of the many notes that blossom in a firm, classically built wine that will make lovers of traditionally made Nebbiolos weak at the knees. Vibrant, translucent and deeply expressive, the 2008 is simply magnificent from the very first taste. I imagine the 2008 will reward readers with another 15–20 years of exceptional drinking. They also show a greater presence of clay and limestone. The 2014 Barolo Margheria is made with fruit from 50-year-old vines and shows compact and dense aromatic intensity as a result. The bouquet is constructed on top of thick layers of dark fruit, dried cherry, balsam herb and crushed mineral. The 2014 mouthfeel, however, veers toward the lean and compact side of the Barolo spectrum.

This single-vineyard Barolo from Serralunga d’Alba ages in botti grandi for 36 months. The vines are 60 years old, and the soils are rich with limestone clay. The Azelia 2016 Barolo Margheria offers that classic twofold punch of power and elegance that is so nicely highlighted in wines from Serralunga d’Alba. For sure, the textural fiber of this wine is richer, denser and tighter than the others, and there is an attractive point of inner black fruit energy and tension that I did not find to the same extent in the Cerretta. If that wine is more focused on the base tones, this wine hits those high tones with better precision. The Margheria vines are 60 years old on average and planted in clayey and calcareous soils that render minerality to the wine. Some 6,100 bottles were rolled out.VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020 The 2016 Barolo Margheria shows the natural weight and gravitas of Serralunga in its dark flavor profile and textural resonance. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice, mint, chalk and bright saline notes are all laced throughout. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 possesses tremendous persistence and class to burn. Wilder suggestions of sage and lavender add savory top notes, while searing tannins punctuate the finish.

The bouquet alone is striking, but it is the wine’s total balance that is most appealing today. Tasted next to the Margheria, the San Rocco is deeper, darker and more overtly powerful, with a greater sense of Serralunga tannic clout. Dark cherry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and sweet spices give the San Rocco much of its exotic personality. The San Rocco was aged in French oak barrels, with about 10% new wood.RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2017 Azelia has hit it out of the ballpark with the three single-vineyard Barolos presented. The 2013 Barolo San Rocco is a rich and penetrating wine that keeps a sharp focus on balance and harmony all the while. This vineyard is located in Serralunga d’Alba, and the vines were planted in the early 1990s. The bouquet is robust and forthcoming with dark fruit, spice and cured leather. But ethereal notes of smoke, tar and licorice also lift delicately from the bouquet. You get both power and elegance with this cellar-worthy wine.

The presentation is simple and powerful, and that’s exactly what makes this vintage work. Wines from 2019 tend to show a little more natural richness and concentration. That is also the case here. VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barbaresco Rabajà-Bas is impressive. Dark and resonant in the glass, with terrific depth, the Rabajà-Bas is a deeply intriguing wine. Black cherry, licorice, smoke, tobacco and dark spice bring out the more virile side of Nebbiolo. A Barbaresco of breadth and power, the 2017 is so expressive today.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 The 2016 Barolo Riserva Monvigliero is powerful and structured. Its pedigree is evident. A wine of vertical depth and intensity, the Riserva impresses with its nuance and overall sense of transparency. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, dried flowers and licorice build into the wonderfully sculpted finish. This is such a gorgeous wine. (Antonio Galloni)
VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019 Ceretto’s 2016 Barbaresco Asili is another stunningly beautiful wine from Ceretto. Here, too, the wine’s energy and tension are simply dazzling. Bright red cherry fruit and floral overtones abound in this taut, crystalline Barbaresco. Readers will have to be patient with the 2016, but it is a jewel of a wine. Deceptively in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 packs a serious punch and really sizzles with vibrancy.
