RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020 The Vietti 2013 Barolo Riserva Villero is a stunning wine, full of life, energy and beautiful complexity. This vintage opens in such a graceful manner, tickling the senses like a feather. With time, that initial softness begins to rise, and the wine grows in aromatic momentum and textural importance to take on magnificent fruit weight. It is soft, caressing and long. Tasted seven years after the harvest, this Riserva is expertly integrated with vibrant primary fruit, tangy acidity and non-intrusive tannins. These elements that make up the grand totality of the wine are carefully contained and chiseled down to a most elegant and beautiful common denominator.VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020 Vietti’s 2013 Barolo Riserva Villero is a showstopper. Wow! dense, powerful and richly constituted, the Villero captivates from the very first taste. Smoke, scorched earth, gravel, cured meats and black cherry are some of the many notes that inform this decidedly somber, brooding Barolo. The interplay of fruit density and structure is just captivating. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of exotic red fruit blood orange and floral overtones, along with huge swaths of tannin. This is the first vintage in which 100% of malolactic fermentation took place in cask rather than in French oak barrique. It is also the finest vintage of the Villero I have ever tasted, and I say that with my often stated view that, at least in the past, the Riserva has never been the best wine in the Vietti range. In a word: dazzling.JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, September 3, 2020 Lots of tar, crushed berries, cedar and dried flowers on the nose. It’s full-bodied with powerful, focused tannins. Tile and dried-earth notes, too. So focused and full of strength, yet it remains agile and polished. Try after 2023 and onwards.
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2017 Very deep garnet-purple, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon 29 Estate has a wonderfully complex nose chock full of smoked meat, yeast extract, toast, sautéed herbs and savory notes over a crème de cassis and blackberry tart core with hints of violets, damp loam and black truffles. Full-bodied, concentrated and full-on opulent in the mouth, the palate is laden with savory, earth and dark fruit layers with a velvety frame and lively lift on the long finish. 670 cases were made.VN92+92+ pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018 Deep, saturated ruby. Captivating aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and menthol are complicated by a very ripe note of dark chocolate and lifted by a lovely violet element. Superripe, chocolatey and dense, conveying a youthfully medicinal quality to its black cherry and licorice flavors; aeration brought a subtle note of sesame paste. Finishes with huge, chewy tannins that dust the tongue and teeth. A bit youthfully brutal, this wine should evolve at a snail’s pace. The crop level here was just 2.4 tons per acre, according to Emerson. Incidentally, this was the first year in which the winery used Portacork’s ICON-certified corks utilizing NDtech technology to guarantee that corks do not have detectible levels of TCA. From an early harvest that was over by September 16.
RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020 Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon 29 Estate offers up intense notes of warm cassis, chocolate-covered cherries, blackberry preserves and wild blueberries with hints of smoked meats, cast iron pan, Indian spices and mossy tree bark in the undercurrent. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is taut and tightly wound, featuring muscular black fruits and a very firm, grainy texture, finishing long and mineral laced. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon 29 Estate is one of the most elegant wines I have tasted from Vineyard 29. Bright and beautifully delineated, with striking energy, the 29 Estate is so impressive. Rich dark blue-toned fruit, licorice, lavender and chocolate infuse the 2018 with layers of nuance that continue to unfold over time. This is such a gorgeous wine. (Antonio Galloni)JD96+96+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021 The gorgeous 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon 29 Estate displays the quality of this vintage, revealing a deep purple/plum color as well as well complex notes of currants, cedar pencil, dried tobacco, chocolate, and leafy herbs. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and incredibly elegant on the palate, it builds nicely with time in the glass and has ripe, yet present tannins, wonderful overall balance, and a great finish. A classic, complete Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, it will benefit from 2–4 years of bottle age and keep for 15–20+. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021 The 2018 Balifico, Volpaia’s Sangiovese/ Cabernet Sauvignon blend, is fabulous. Rich and inky, the 2018 offers up a compelling mélange of dark berry fruit, dark spice, licorice and espresso. I especially admire the wine’s textural richness. I imagine the 2018 will drink well for many, many years to come. In this tasting it is a total knock-out.SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021 Alluring violet, black currant and black cherry fruit introduces this seductive red, with firm, pointed tannins and vivid acidity providing structure as this glides to a lingering, detailed finish. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2037. 750 cases made, 200 cases imported.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021 Intense, this sweet style delivers honey, caramel, roasted almond and spice aromas and flavors, leaving a light layer of tannins on the tactile finish. Drink now through 2030. 350 cases made, 200 cases imported.VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021 The 2015 Vinsanto del Chianti Classico offers lovely density in an understated, mid-weight style that is quite appealing. Spice, orange peel, hazelnut, dried flowers and light caramel notes all grace this creamy Vin Santo from Volpaia. The 2015 is very nicely done.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2019 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane Vineyard is elegant, understated and classy. Silky tannins and mid-weight structure give the 2019 so much appeal. As with all of these wines, the flavors are bright and punchy, with plenty of red berry, white pepper, mint and citrus character.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Chardonnay Cuvée Alyce is a classic Stephen Hansel wine. It offers notable richness but also a great deal of transparency. Hansel blends two variations of Wente Clone Chardonnay (Hyde and Hudson) with some clone 76 for his Cuvée Alyce, a Chardonnay that exudes class. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2019 Pinot Noir Cuvée Alyce is a dark, powerful wine. Black cherry, plum, cedar, lavender, spice and menthol infuse the Alyce with notable depth. Dense and muscular, the Alyce is a decidedly potent, backward Pinot. All it needs is a bit of time to be at its best. (Antonio Galloni)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019 Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2017 Pinot Noir South Slope (all Dijon clone 777) has a savory nose of toast, dried leaves, pipe tobacco, dried rose petals, amaro and tangerine peel with a core of blackberries and cranberries. The palate is medium-bodied and silky with fine, grainy tannins and great freshness, finishing long. 1,081 cases produced.VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020 Hansel’s 2017 Pinot Noir The South Slope Vineyard is a very pretty and expressive wine. Spice, game, earthy notes, licorice and dried cherry give the South Slope its distinctly savory personality. Pliant and juicy, the 2017 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Today, the fruit is a bit in the background, while earthier qualities are more present than they were last year.
JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/6/2021 The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series is a gem and well worth seeking out. Based on 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Syrah, brought up in 28% new oak, it offers an outstanding nose of blackcurrants, toasted spice, chocolate, and bouquet garni. Concentrated, firm and structured, with medium to full-bodied richness, it’s another age-worthy wine in the lineup that needs to be forgotten for 3–5 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020 Bright ruby-red. Pure, youthfully medicinal scents of cassis, boysenberry, blueberry, licorice, menthol, bitter chocolate and pungent herbs. Brisk, delineated, high-pitched and tightly wound, with classic medicinal Cabernet Sauvignon character in the early going. Dominant flavors of cassis, licorice, menthol and dark chocolate. I did not taste this bottle alongside its 2017 sibling, but the two wines strike me as quite similar in style and quality. This one is perhaps a bit sweeter and may open sooner but is still quite firm and tactile on the finish. (Stephen Tanzer)JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 12, 2021 A fragrant nose of blackcurrants, pine, rosemary, incense and sandalwood. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. Structured and polished with a fresh finish. Drink from 2022.WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2022 This wine isn’t ready to reveal itself right now, with locked up aromas of chocolate, cocoa, cherry and spice. Coffee and cherry flavors follow. Give it some additional time in the cellar to blossom.
JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/6/2021 My favorite in the lineup, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Vines is 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec, all aged 22 months in new barrels. Loads of ripe red and black fruits, dried herbs, crushed stone, and savory herb notes give way to a full-bodied, concentrated, yet beautifully balanced, weightless Cabernet that will benefit from 4–6 years in the cellar and keep for two decades or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2021 Dark chocolate, barrel spice, vanilla, cherry and licorice aromas are followed by luscious black fruit flavors. There’s plenty of richness, texture and seamlessness along with a whole lot of structure. A long finish caps it off. It’s all about hedonism, but still possesses impressive balance, a classically Woodward styled wine. The oak is forward at present. Give it some time in the cellar or decant. Best after 2024.JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 12, 2021 Blackcurrants, black cherries, charcoal, walnuts and cedar on the nose. It’s full-bodied with firm, ripe tannins. Concentrated and flavorful with a succulent core of dark, spiced fruit. Try from 2022.VN91+91+ pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020 Bright, dark ruby-red. Brooding, almost inky scents of blackberry, blueberry, licorice, dark chocolate and minerals. Tightlyl wound but already seamless and fine-grained, with a high pitch to its flavors of dark berries, herbs, licorice and spicy oak. The impression of inner-mouth energy carries through to the firmly tannic, bright, lifted finish, which leaves the salivary glands quivering. Still quite dry and youthfully imploded, and in need of cellaring. This began a touch sweeter than the Artist Series #27 but turned more penetrating and less pliant with 24 hours in the recorked bottle.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2021 Hints of smoky lapsang souchong tea leaves and anise accent ripe yet zesty blackberry and cassis in this full-bodied, supple red. It’s a rich, rounded Pinot Noir held upright by zesty darts of acidity and finishing in pools of soft, silky tannins. While a bit nervous in youth it should hit peak from 2024 through 2030 and hold further. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/21 Xavier Monnot farms two acres in Clos des Chênes, one acre planted in 1936, the other in 1978. Those old vines produced a dark and meaty Volnay in 2019, perfumed up front, then calming to red cherry succulence in a firm finish. The wine seems to harness the heat of the vintage and direct it into potential energy, well worth following over the next five to ten years.VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020 The 2019 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet featuring overt floral notes of rose petal and pressed irises. There is a subtle confit element that becomes apparent with aeration. The palate is plush and fleshy on the entry, and there is a fine bead of acidity to keep it balanced. A polished Clos des Chênes with a little spice on the finish. It will require 3–4 years in bottle, like the Beaune Toussaints, but it has the substance to age well for another 12–15 years, possibly more. (Neal Martin)
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2021 Deep ruby to the eye, this wine offers a bouquet of cassis, raspberry preserves and thyme. Flavors of black currant, raspberry, anise, Mediterranean herbs and milk chocolate are set into a network of plush tannins that fill the palate and then wind down towards a smooth finish. (Mike Desimone)
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, May 5, 2023 This is one of those wines where your nose is in the glass for ages, enjoying the complex array of aromas that range from raspberries to dates, perfumed bark to polished wood, pressed flowers to fresh mushrooms. Full-bodied, dense and focused with fine, well-integrated tannins, plenty of fruit flavor and an endless finish. A joy to drink even now, but this will age gracefully for many a year. (James Suckling)VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2023 The 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato is totally classic to the Zenato style, with macerated cherries, raisins, sweet herbs, cocoa, black pepper and shavings of cedar. This deeply textural with a dense wave of mineral-encased dark red fruits and balsamic spice carried across a core of stimulating acidity. Mocha and clove mix with black currant and olive as the 2017 finishes dramatically long and potent. There’s simply so much going on here, and more is guaranteed to come with maturation. Also of note is that the 2017 clocks in at only 3.3 grams of residual sugar. This is as serious as they come. (Eric Guido)
