JD93+93–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 The 2019 Barolo Berri was tasted from two barrels, one of which utilized whole bunches in the fermentation. While both offered freshness and purity, the second barrel offered more significant spice in its profile, with more depth of fruit, and is firmly structured at this stage. The components are compelling and should make for a wonderful finished blend in a few years’ time. (Audrey Frick)VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2019 Barolo Berri is tightly wound and austere in the early going. Crushed red berry fruit, iron, dried herbs and white pepper give the Berri a striking aromatic top register. The tannins are a bit nervy, though, so a few years in bottle are warranted. Frost decimated the crop at Torriglione, which is why this wine (typically the Barolo del Comune di La Morra) is Berri in 2019. To be exact, there is 4% Torriglione, as that was the wine used for topping. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021 Saturated ruby. Deep-pitched red/blue fruit liqueur aromas pick up suggestions of licorice, pipe tobacco and pungent flowers and herbs with air. In a lush, weighty style, offering expansive black raspberry, cherry cola, singed plum and fruitcake flavors sharpened by a jolt of spiciness on the back half. For all this wine’s richness, it’s energetic as well, showing solid, spice- and floral-driven persistence on the finish, which is framed by velvety, even tannins.JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021 The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape is ruby/purple-hued and has the classic translucent color of the domaine. It’s more precise and focused than the Télégramme and will need more time, but it offers a complex, gorgeous bouquet of red and black fruits, crushed stone, wild fennel, and ground pepper. Pure, medium to full-bodied, and elegant, do your best to hide bottles for 5–7 years and it’s going to keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023 It’s hard to put the glass down while exploring the depths of raspberry compote, dried orange peels, roses, exotic spice and a dusting of cocoa that form the absolutely stunning bouquet of the 2019 Carmignano Riserva Piaggia. This is pure elegance. It’s silky and refined as liquid violet florals and ripe red and black fruits easily rush across the palate. Its vibrant acidity maintains exceptional finesse despite the massive primary concentration slowly taking hold. The 2019 finishes long with a coating of sweet tannins and balsamic-tinged cherry. The balance here is amazing, which might trick readers into finishing their bottles far too quickly, but trust me, the best is truly yet to come. This is Rock Star juice. (Eric Guido)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Pagani Ranch is a beautiful, expressive wine from one of Sonoma Valley’s great sites. Rich, pliant and explosive, the 2021 possesses captivating inner perfume, vivid fruit and exceptional balance. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, spice, mocha and a kiss of new oak all race across the palate. An alluring, captivating wine, the Pagani Ranch is total sensuality. As good as the 2021 is—and it is very good—it could have been legendary. That is especially evident when looking at wines from Bedrock and Old Hill, two of the other grand crus of this stretch of vineyards in Sonoma Valley. VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019 Ceretto’s 2016 Barbaresco Asili is another stunningly beautiful wine from Ceretto. Here, too, the wine’s energy and tension are simply dazzling. Bright red cherry fruit and floral overtones abound in this taut, crystalline Barbaresco. Readers will have to be patient with the 2016, but it is a jewel of a wine. Deceptively in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 packs a serious punch and really sizzles with vibrancy.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021 Bright ruby. Vibrant, spice-accented aromas of raspberry and cherry liqueur, incense and pungent flowers are accompanied by a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Deep-pitched yet impressively lively as well, offering intense red and dark berry liqueur and floral pastille flavors that stain the palate and show superb clarity and minerally lift. Closes extremely long, focused and lively, with silky tannins framing the wine’s sweet fruit. This is about as good as a "basic" Châteauneuf gets.JD92+92–94 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020 The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape showed beautifully, with a deeper ruby/purple color as well as incredible Provençal notes of peppery garrigue, dried flowers, and jammy red and black berry fruits. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a great mid-palate, loads of building tannins, a solid spine of acidity, and a big finish. This is one smoking good, classic cuvée that savvy readers should snatch up. It will have 10–15 years of prime drinking.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021 The 2018 Il Carbonaione is one of the most elegant editions of this flagship wine I can remember tasting. Il Carbonaione is usually a rich, bombastic wine, but the 2018 is sleek, gracious and remarkably refined. The fruit was picked a week later than originally planned because of a family emergency. That results in an exotic Carbonaione that is beguiling but not at all heavy. I can’t wait to see how it ages.

Rita Hills releases, the 2020 Pinot Noir Seabiscuit Zotovich Vineyard has a complex bouquet of spiced red berry fruits as well as forest floor, loamy earth, baking spices, and some sea-like brine and iron nuances. Beautiful on the palate, it’s tight, structured, and focused, with medium to full-bodied richness, present tannins, and a great finish. It needs a year or two, but this is brilliant juice. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir Zotovich Vineyard Seabiscuit is terrific. It captures all the lift and savory intensity typical of this site but with the added fruit concentration and depth that are such Paul Lato signatures. Crushed rose petal, mint, dried herbs and red-fleshed fruit abound. This is one of the more restrained Pinots in the Lato portfolio, in relative terms. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2018 Agrapart’s NV Brut 7 Crus is simply gorgeous. Rich, creamy and inviting, the 7 Crus hits all the right notes. The 7 Crus doesn’t quite have the focus or energy of the top wines here, but it is incredibly delicious, approachable and relatively easy to find. This may very well be the finest release of the 7 Crus I have ever tasted since this cuvée debuted a few years ago. The 7 Crus is 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir. This release is equal parts 2015 and 2014. Don’t miss it! Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged: May 2018. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 Plumpjack’s 2019 Merlot offers terrific tension and grip. In 2019, the Merlot includes fruit from a site in Carneros, and that seams to add an extra dimension of energy that is quite appealing. Dried herbs, leather, tobacco and crushed flowers lend striking aromatic nuance to this savory, beautifully delineated wine. The 2019 is super distinctive, not to mention a real pleasure to taste. VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard is a model of precision and class. Pure and crystalline, the 2021 is superb. I would give it a few years to settle down, but all the elements are in place. Lemon peel, chalk, mint, white flowers, sage and crushed rocks abound in this striking, riveting Chardonnay. The 2021 is just pristine. This is what Trout Gulch Chardonnay is all about. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2022 Depicting a bucolic scene of the church in Boulay’s home of Chavignol along with a couple of goats—this is home to the cheese crottin de Chavignol — the 2021 Sancerre is a rich and impressive style that’s full of nectarine fruit. Vinified in barrel, there’s a roundness to Sauvignon’s normally angular edge and a hint of sweetness although Boulay insists it is fully dry. The white limestone soils provide the tender texture, but there’s a real sense of structural grip on the long finish. Delicious now but based on historic examples, will be even better in 10 years. At the end of the tasting Boulay mentioned the wines had been open for several days before my arrival, and I will endeavor to taste fresh samples. (Rebecca Gibb MW)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is deeply expressive, showing peppery red berries and pomegranate plus hints of tomato leaf and sage, reminding me of that moment you add fresh herbs to a just-finished ragù. This is pure silk on the palate, rich and pliant, as it slowly saturates the senses with mineral-laced red and hints of blue fruit. Intensely primary and licorice-tinged, it tapers off grippy and classically dry to lasting rosy florals. The 2017 is a bit like a tamed beast of a Brunello.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru from vines located on the Saint-Aubin side on shallow soils, has wonderful mineralité on the nose, crushed rock filtering through the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, lively and spicy on the finish with veins of stem ginger. I love this… you will too. (Neal Martin)
