While the woven basket that surrounds that bottle of Chianti is iconic, it is by no means the only Italian wine worth having with pasta and meatballs. Italian wines are excellent because their low acidity and lush body increase the ease with which they pair with any kind of food. The general rule is that any meal with a red sauce can match with an Italian red wine, but Italian white wines also make excellent pairings with chicken, fish, and even pizza.
Italy boasts some of the world's oldest vineyards, as well as some of the most dignified and respected estates in the wine world. Whether you're shopping for a bright, juicy Montepulciano to drink with pizza or a refined, aged Barolo for a five-star night, WineMadeEasy.com is your source for Italian wine at great prices.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021 The 2018 Il Carbonaione is one of the most elegant editions of this flagship wine I can remember tasting. Il Carbonaione is usually a rich, bombastic wine, but the 2018 is sleek, gracious and remarkably refined. The fruit was picked a week later than originally planned because of a family emergency. That results in an exotic Carbonaione that is beguiling but not at all heavy. I can’t wait to see how it ages.
VN96+96+ pts. - Vinous - Mar 2023 The 2016 Amarore della Valpolicella Morandina is dark and youthfully understated in the glass, as crushed rose petals and store dust give way to red currants. This is silky-smooth, nearly velvety in feel, with masses of mineral-tinged black cherry and spice contrasted by a twang of sour citrus. The 2016 finishes with outstanding length and depth yet is also remarkably fresh, leaving hints of hard red candy and the slightest touch of bitter cocoa. The Amarone of Prà is always so unique but in the best possible way. The 2016 is a total gem but needs cellaring to come fully into focus. (Eric Guido)JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 4, 2022 A savory and complex expression of Amarone with some dried cherries, red dates, stewed herbs, orange peel, tobacco and white pepper. Some bold green peppercorn, too. A svelte delivery of Amarone with a medium body, showing tobacco, cedar and chocolate on the palate. Long, cedary finish. Drink or hold.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2022 This elegant red is medium- to full-bodied, with creamy tannins providing a fine frame for flavors of brambly red currant and blackberry fruit, pine, orange peel and crushed pink peppercorn. A subtle, savory overtone of cured tobacco and smoky bacon fat echoes on the fresh finish. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta. Drink now through 2030. 833 cases made, 250 cases imported. JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 No crus were produced in 2018. The 2018 Barbaresco is aromatically expressive, with a perfumed and mineral character, with rocky earth. It has medium body, good concentration, and plenty of fruit and mineral earth that drive through the finish. An outstanding value, drink 2025–2045. (Audrey Frick)RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022 Packaged in its distinctive brown paper label, the Produttori del Barbaresco 2018 Barbaresco is a beautifully lean and luminous expression of Nebbiolo, and that pretty color should remain intact over time. The aromas are bold and ripe with dark and purple fruit, but the bouquet shows interesting twists with earth, truffle, licorice and grilled herb. As the wine opens in the glass, you begin to notice heavier aromas of raisin and dried apricot. It wears a warm-vintage signature for sure, and for that reason, I would suggest a shorter drinking window for the 2018. With an ample 300,000 bottles made, you get a great value with this bottle. (Monica Larner)JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, January 3, 2022 Lovely barbaresco, with all the typical nebbiolo characteristics, such as red berries, mushrooms and dried leaves, as well as hints of bitter orange peel and spice. All this follows through to the medium-to full-bodied palate, where fine, lightly firm tannins add a little grip and additional focus. Compact, but bursting with flavor. Delicious now, but give it a year or two. It will only get better.VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 The 2018 Barbaresco is an attractive, open-knit wine to drink now and over the next 10–15 years, maybe more. In 2018 the Produttori did not bottle their Riservas. Instead, all of the best lots of those grapes went into the straight Barbaresco bottling, another in a long string of successes from this historic house. Dark cherry, cedar, tobacco and spice fill out the layers. There is good depth and a good deal of tannin too, just not the complexity or nuance of the very best years.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 The 2021 Dolcetto d’Alba Bric del Salto is bursting with character. Dark red/blue fruit, lavender, rose petal and spice all race out of the glass. The 2021 is marked by intense, deep fruit, yet it also has a good deal of energy driving the balance. Sweet floral accents lift the finish. (Antonio Galloni)
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 4, 2021 A nice balance of savory and fruity character on the nose with ripe berries and dark plums, together with notes of dried flowers. Medium-bodied with fresh-plum flavors, light tannins and plum-skin acidity keeping it fresh and adding some drive. Drink now.
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, January 3, 2022 Ripe brambleberries and a tinge of coffee on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with firm, coffee-chocolate tannins that give a lightly chewy finish. Nice flavors to this, but give it a little time for the tannins to mellow. Drinkable now, but best in 2023. (James Suckling)VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2022 One of the prettiest mixes of blackberries tinged with violet candies and spiced orange peels wafts up from the 2020 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riparosso. It’s juicy and fun, yet also silky with medium weight textures; ripe red and hints of blueberry fruits wash across the palate. A staining of minerality lingers, along with a pleasant inner sweetness to balance, as nuances of lavender fade. While not the deepest Montepulciano, the value here is unprecedented. I would drink this any day of the week. (Eric Guido)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022 The 2020 Chianti Classico is plump, juicy and absolutely delicious. Soft contours wrap around succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, mocha, spice and new leather. This forward, open-knit Chianti Classico is not terribly complex, but it sure is delicious. (Antonio Galloni)
