While the woven basket that surrounds that bottle of Chianti is iconic, it is by no means the only Italian wine worth having with pasta and meatballs. Italian wines are excellent because their low acidity and lush body increase the ease with which they pair with any kind of food. The general rule is that any meal with a red sauce can match with an Italian red wine, but Italian white wines also make excellent pairings with chicken, fish, and even pizza.
Italy boasts some of the world's oldest vineyards, as well as some of the most dignified and respected estates in the wine world. Whether you're shopping for a bright, juicy Montepulciano to drink with pizza or a refined, aged Barolo for a five-star night, WineMadeEasy.com is your source for Italian wine at great prices.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2018 The 2014 Barolo Margheria opens with beguiling, deep-pitched aromatics. Bright red cherry and plum fruit, licorice, anise, rose water and orange peel are some of the many notes that give the wine its personality. Bright, saline and sculpted in feel, the 2014 is going to need a few years to fully unwind, but it is unquestionably vibrant and expressive today. The 2014 spent three years in cask.SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2019 Savory, boasting lavender, juniper and mint aromas, yet there is sweet ripe cherry and plum fruit flavors for balance too. Builds to a long finish, where big tannins reign. Best from 2023 through 2043. 675 cases made.RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2018 Here is a darker and more robust wine from Serralunga d’Alba where soils are heavier. They also show a greater presence of clay and limestone. The 2014 Barolo Margheria is made with fruit from 50-year-old vines and shows compact and dense aromatic intensity as a result. The bouquet is constructed on top of thick layers of dark fruit, dried cherry, balsam herb and crushed mineral. The 2014 mouthfeel, however, veers toward the lean and compact side of the Barolo spectrum.
VN93+93+ pts. - Vinous - Dec 2016 Deep ruby-red. Deep, reticent aromas of blood orange, red currant and gunflint; aroma-wise, this is very different from the Moganazzi and the San Lorenzo. Then very herbal and floral, offering subdued red cherry fruit and pomegranate flavors. Finishes long and with mouth-coating but noble tannins that will need plenty of cellaring. This wine actually reminded me a lot of Tenuta delle Terre Nere’s Guardiola bottling.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2022 The 2014 Rosso del Bepi is understated yet very pretty, showing nuances of woodland berries laced with sour citrus, savory herbs and a hint of animal muskiness. This washes across the palate with silken textures, yet delivers masses of tart red berries and minerals that add grippy tension. It’s remarkably fresh and zesty in character, and it’s amazing to think that the 2014 underwent the same appassimento that an Amarone did in better years. This tapers off spicy with a sour citrus twang under inner violet florals, as round tannins linger. The 2014 may not have the depth of a Quintarelli Amarone, but it instead possesses verve and is packed full of character. (Eric Guido)
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2018 Another highlight in this range, the 2014 Barolo Ravera opens with the most exquisite, captivating aromatics imaginable. It will be interesting to see if it develops a bit more midpalate depth and pliancy. Today, the 2014 is a bit austere, even within the context of the year and this site, where the wines are a bit on the nervous side to start. I have seen Vietti Raveras blossom into spectacular wines and imagine that will be the case here as well. Readers should not plan on opening a bottle anytime soon.RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2018 To my palate, the Ravera cru is one of the most immediately recognizable in the entire Barolo appellation. It gives off robust aromas of cherry liqueur and bitter chocolate. Those are two of the beautifully polished characteristics you get with the 2014 Barolo Ravera. But there is a lot more complexity to behold in this wine. Subtle notes of balsam herb, crushed mineral and rusty iron also appear. This next descriptor might seem awkward to a non-Italian readership, but you might even detect a hint of perfumed anchovy. It’s all good and all beautiful.
