While the woven basket that surrounds that bottle of Chianti is iconic, it is by no means the only Italian wine worth having with pasta and meatballs. Italian wines are excellent because their low acidity and lush body increase the ease with which they pair with any kind of food. The general rule is that any meal with a red sauce can match with an Italian red wine, but Italian white wines also make excellent pairings with chicken, fish, and even pizza.
Italy boasts some of the world's oldest vineyards, as well as some of the most dignified and respected estates in the wine world. Whether you're shopping for a bright, juicy Montepulciano to drink with pizza or a refined, aged Barolo for a five-star night, WineMadeEasy.com is your source for Italian wine at great prices.
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 5, 2021 Dark berries with walnuts, hazelnuts and white pepper on the nose, following through to a full body with ultra-fine tannins and a chewy yet refined finish. Needs two or three years to come together. Drink after 2023.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2022 Vibrant yet silky, boasting black cherry, blackberry, violet and iron flavors. The iron fist emerges by way of the firm tannins, and this finishes with a long aftertaste of fruit and dried herbs. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. Drink now through 2030. 7,920 cases made.VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The zesty 2019 Non Confunditur wafts up with a darkly alluring yet also wonderfully fresh bouquet, as blackberries and currants give way to rubbed sage and crushed ashen stone. This is silky-smooth and soothing, casting a polished display of black and red berries across the palate, as mineral-driven tension forms toward the close. Sweet tannins create a sensation of youthful poise, yet they don’t get in the way of the primary fruits that saturate throughout the long finish. Non Confunditur is refined in second and third-pass barriques and tonneaux, and it is composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon along with 20% Merlot and 10% Sangiovese.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Solengo seduces with its richly decadent display of vanilla and mocha-tinged dark fruits and spices, which are wonderfully lifted by minty herbal tones and white smoke. This enters the palate like weighted velvet, smooth and fleshy at first, yet lively, as mineral-tinged black currants mix with fine-grained tannins, clamping down with youthful poise. Like the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, this tapers off incredibly long and staining, with echoes of licorice beneath an air of cedar and tobacco; yet somehow, through it all, the palate is left watering for more. It will be many years before the 2019 is ready to show its best, but it will certainly be worth the wait. The Solengo is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese that spends eighteen months refining in a combination of 60% new to 40% second-pass barriques. (Eric Guido)RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2022 Opening to a thick, blackish appearance, the Argiano 2019 Solengo is definitely more concentrated and tightly stitched together next to the 2018 edition. This is a supersized blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot, 20% Merlot and 5% Sangiovese that reveals the extra concentration of the vintage, and the important use of new and used French oak (for 18 months of aging), to create a texturally important and aromatically intense expression. The vines are planted in alluvial soils rich in sand and calcareous marl at 280 to 310 meters in elevation. The grapes are farmed organically and are relatively young, at up to 22 years of age. Plummy fruit and ripe blackberry segues to spice, tar and tobacco. This 2019 vintage shows better tannin management compared to the more astringent 2018 edition. Some 34,000 bottles (heavy glass bottles) were released. (Monica Larner)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2018 The 2014 Barolo Margheria opens with beguiling, deep-pitched aromatics. Bright red cherry and plum fruit, licorice, anise, rose water and orange peel are some of the many notes that give the wine its personality. Bright, saline and sculpted in feel, the 2014 is going to need a few years to fully unwind, but it is unquestionably vibrant and expressive today. The 2014 spent three years in cask.SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2019 Savory, boasting lavender, juniper and mint aromas, yet there is sweet ripe cherry and plum fruit flavors for balance too. Builds to a long finish, where big tannins reign. Best from 2023 through 2043. 675 cases made.RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2018 Here is a darker and more robust wine from Serralunga d’Alba where soils are heavier. They also show a greater presence of clay and limestone. The 2014 Barolo Margheria is made with fruit from 50-year-old vines and shows compact and dense aromatic intensity as a result. The bouquet is constructed on top of thick layers of dark fruit, dried cherry, balsam herb and crushed mineral. The 2014 mouthfeel, however, veers toward the lean and compact side of the Barolo spectrum.
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020 Here is a wonderfully executed Barolo to applaud. The Azelia 2016 Barolo Margheria offers that classic twofold punch of power and elegance that is so nicely highlighted in wines from Serralunga d’Alba. For sure, the textural fiber of this wine is richer, denser and tighter than the others, and there is an attractive point of inner black fruit energy and tension that I did not find to the same extent in the Cerretta. If that wine is more focused on the base tones, this wine hits those high tones with better precision. The Margheria vines are 60 years old on average and planted in clayey and calcareous soils that render minerality to the wine. Some 6,100 bottles were rolled out.VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020 The 2016 Barolo Margheria shows the natural weight and gravitas of Serralunga in its dark flavor profile and textural resonance. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice, mint, chalk and bright saline notes are all laced throughout. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 possesses tremendous persistence and class to burn. Wilder suggestions of sage and lavender add savory top notes, while searing tannins punctuate the finish.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2017 Another highlight in this range, the 2013 Barolo San Rocco is utterly beguiling. The bouquet alone is striking, but it is the wine’s total balance that is most appealing today. Tasted next to the Margheria, the San Rocco is deeper, darker and more overtly powerful, with a greater sense of Serralunga tannic clout. Dark cherry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and sweet spices give the San Rocco much of its exotic personality. The San Rocco was aged in French oak barrels, with about 10% new wood.RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2017 Azelia has hit it out of the ballpark with the three single-vineyard Barolos presented. The 2013 Barolo San Rocco is a rich and penetrating wine that keeps a sharp focus on balance and harmony all the while. This vineyard is located in Serralunga d’Alba, and the vines were planted in the early 1990s. The bouquet is robust and forthcoming with dark fruit, spice and cured leather. But ethereal notes of smoke, tar and licorice also lift delicately from the bouquet. You get both power and elegance with this cellar-worthy wine.

WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2019 Berry-hued and bright, this is a champ for cocktail mixing and pleasing to sip straight. Red fruit leads the nose and palate, suggesting juicy raspberry and ripe cherry, enlivened by a hint of rosewater and finishing slightly drying and mildly bitter. Think of this as a refreshing alternative to sweet vermouth.
VN8989 pts. - Vinous - May 2023 The 2022 Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is a lovely dark pink color in the glass. Wild strawberry and rose aromas form its bouquet. This is silky-smooth with a pretty inner sweetness and crisp cherry-berry fruits. It finishes relatively fresh yet a little short, leaving a lingering hint of licorice. (Eric Guido)
VN8787 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022 The 2020 Nero d’Avola is dark with exotic spices, masses of black raspberry and a contrasting hint of mint that forms its bouquet. This is a fruit-forward and juicy effort, yet balance is nicely maintained through cooling acidity and a trace of sour citrus. It finishes fresh with hints of licorice and inner rose tones that linger. As entry-level Nero d’Avola goes, this is an excellent value.
