You say Syrah, and I say Shiraz. Wine lovers will tell you they're the same grape, just from different settings. The Australian red wine, Shiraz, burst onto the scene in the 1990's and remains popular to this day, and it's hard to believe it's made from the same grape that's used to make the famous red wines of France's Northern Rhône. Thanks to the vastly different climates and terroir in those two places, the grape produces vastly different wines.
Other regions are having some success with Syrah/Shiraz wine, as well. California, South Africa, Chile, and others have created some stellar bottles in recent years.
If you're in the market for a red wine - Shiraz, Syrah...whatever you want to call it - look no further than WineMadeEasy.com!
RP98+98–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022 Subtle hints of fresh pea shoots accent characteristic dark notes of roasted meat, espresso and black olives in the full-bodied 2018 Cote Rotie La Landonne. Rich, concentrated and velvety-textured, with ample length and plenty of ripe tannins on the finish, it should benefit from a decade or more of bottle age—once it gets there. It’s a brooding beast of a Cote Rotie that serious collectors will want to have in their cellars.JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/6/2022 The 2018 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is another wine that’s going to be up at the top of the scale, and all three of these 2018s will be candidates for perfection. Always the biggest, richest wine of the three flagships, it’s inky hued and has a primordial nose of blackberries, cassis, and currants fruits as well as huge ground pepper, cured meats, espresso, and underbrush. As Landonne as Landonne gets, it’s full-bodied, has a dense, powerful mid-palate, masses of tannins, and is going to be just about immortal. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP98+98–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022 The 2018 Cote Rotie La Mouline is immensely seductive, offering up enticing notes of floral potpourri and red berries on the nose. Those strawberries and raspberries persist onto the full-bodied palate and through the long, lush finish, buoyed by supple, creamy-textured tannins. This is the most complete, compelling vintage of La Mouline I’ve tasted.JD97+97–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022 Scheduled to be bottled early in 2022, the 2018 Côte Rôtie La Mouline is a blockbuster of a wine offering full-bodied aromas and flavors of black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, espresso, and violets. Coming from a steep, terraced, warmer terroir and fermented with 10% Viognier, it’s always the sexiest, more exotic, and seamless, as well as approachable, of the flagship releases. The 2018 will unquestionably pure a smile on your face as soon as it’s released, but it will ideally be given 7–8 years of bottle age and drunk over the following 30+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 26th Dec 2012 Another perfect wine is the 2009 Cote Rotie La Turque. It possesses a slightly denser purple color than the opaque Cote Rotie La Mouline as well as notes of Asian spices, roasted meats, bouquet garni, spring flowers, camphor and truffles. It is a different expression of Syrah as this comes from the more iron-laden soils of the Cote Brune. Although never as aromatic, precocious or enjoyable as La Mouline is in its youth, La Turque is, nevertheless, a remarkably concentrated, profound wine that is built like a skyscraper. It possesses a level of intensity and richness that must be tasted to be believed. Despite the flamboyant personality of the vintage, the 2009 will require 4–5 years of cellaring and should age effortlessly for 25–30 years.SP9898 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2013 A pure, unadulterated raspberry confiture aroma and flavor is the dominant note today in this deep and expressive red, with extra singed anise, alder, juniper and black currant notes filling in the background, followed by a very dense yet supremely polished finish. Features the weight and density of this fleshy vintage, but the fruit is so inviting this is almost approachable now. Better to wait though. Best from 2015 through 2035. 400 cases made.
JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022 The 2018 Côte Rôtie La Turque offers meatier, more savory, mineral-driven aromatics yet has an incredible core of pure cassis and darker fruits. A straight-up massive wine, it has a stacked mid-palate, terrific freshness, and again, a purity of fruit that’s just off the chart. Despite its overall size and richness, it’s weightless and as graceful as a ballerina. It always needs more time to come around compared to the La Mouline and generally starts to drink beautifully a decade after the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP94+94–96+? pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022 Shut down tight on this occasion, the dark, impenetrable 2018 Cote Rotie La Turque is clearly dense and packed with potential. Cedary notes, dark, concentrated fruit, potent tannins and a long, dusty finish suggest plenty of upside for the patient.
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 26th Dec 2012 Another perfect wine, the 2009 Hermitage Ex-Voto is surprisingly supple and more approachable than the two single vineyard 2009 Cote Roties, La Turque and La Landonne. The massive Ex-Voto boasts abundant notes of spring flowers, blackberries, cassis, licorice, graphite and forest floor. Extremely full-bodied with sweet tannin and levels of extravagance and flamboyance that are mind-boggling, it will drink well for 30+ years.SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2013 This has a distinctive singed mesquite note out front, along with sandalwood, black tea and juniper hints, followed by a very densely packed core of raspberry, plum and blackberry confiture flavors. The long, charcoal-studded finish has a great tug of roasted earth. Dynamic and expressive, this should cellar effortlessly. Best from 2015 through 2035. 656 cases made.ST9595 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Mar/Apr 2014 Dark purple. Seductive aromas of cassis, cherry compote and floral pastilles are lifted by peppery spices and smoky minerals. Sweet and expansive in the mouth, with a chewy texture to the vibrant blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors. Supple tannins come on late and are quickly absorbed into the wine’s dense fruit. Finishes on a smoky note, with outstanding clarity and lift and sweet, penetrating persistence. Stash this one away in a dark corner of the cellar and forget it for a long time.
SP9898 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2014 This has lavish range, with intense steeped plum, anise, pain d’épices, singed apple wood and fruitcake notes layered together, framed by smoldering charcoal and sweet tobacco accents and riveted to a tarry spine. Expands like a fractal in the glass to display enormous depth and length. Features mouthwatering cut from start to finish despite the heft. An extremely impressive wine that will need some time to stretch out fully. Best from 2018 through 2040. 600 cases made.RP97+97–99 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2013 Most likely just as good, with additional freshness and focus, the 2010 Ermitage Ex-Voto offers up an incredibly pure, fresh and nuanced bouquet of creme de cassis, licorice, crushed stone and spring flowers that flows to a full-bodied, detailed and yet gorgeously rich and textured palate. A serious barrel sample, with massive mid-palate depth and concentration, this beauty will require patience, yet should have an easy 3–4 decades of longevity.
JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/12/2019 The 2018 Ermitage Ex Voto is stunning, and comes closest in my mind to a mix of the 2015 and 2016. Showing more blue fruits, violets, chocolate, and a liquid rock-like minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, massive amounts of fruit, and building tannins. While the 2017 has more upfront exuberance, I love the purity, depth, and sheer class of the 2018. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022 Still in barrel, the 2018 Ermitage Ex Voto continues to impress. Brown sugar notes accent cherries and raspberries on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is lush and expansive, delivering waves of pleasure on the mid-palate before ending long and silky.
JD92+92–94 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/12/2019 I was blown away by the 2018 Saint Joseph, and let’s hope it continues showing this well over the course of its élevage. Rocking levels of crème de cassis, blackberries, crushed violets, and earth all give way to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, sexy effort that ranks with the finest vintages of this release to date. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 Deep magenta. Dark berry preserves, olive, cracked pepper and a hint of licorice on the fragrant nose. Offers supple, appealingly jammy blackberry, cherry preserve and spicecake flavors that become livelier as the wine opens up. Rounded tannins lend shape to a long, smoky finish that leaves candied licorice and dark fruit liqueur notes behind. This is a distinctly ample rendition of this bottling, and it will stand up to the richest red meat preparations. Aged for two years in used oak barrels. (Josh Raynolds)JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, October 11, 2019 An attractively fresh and fragrant nose with acacia-like perfume, chamomile and fresh pear aromas. The palate has a super juicy peach core with such fresh, fleshy appeal and a late, toasty glow. Drink this now.RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019 Purists may cringe, but Guigal’s 2018 Saint-Joseph is undeniably luscious. Hints of pencil shavings and crushed stone appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is silky-velvety in texture, loaded with ripe raspberries and cream. For value-seeking consumers, this is one release to watch for down the pike.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2014 A juicy, almost gutsy style, with a mix of raspberry coulis, plum paste and fig sauce notes, pushed from behind by lively briar and anise accents. The rich finish shows an ample wood component, presenting a singed juniper edge that adds range and texture. Drink now through 2022. 1,000 cases made.RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2014 Still in barrel, the 2011 Guigal St Joseph Vignes des Hospices is a gorgeous Syrah that has layers of creme de cassis, blackberry, licorice, toast, pepper and caramelized meat on both the nose and palate. Medium to full-bodied, with the forward, sexy feel of the vintage, it’s a pleasure-bent Saint Joseph to drink over the coming 12–15 years.
RP93+93–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022 Perennially among the best bottlings from the appellation, the 2019 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l’Hospice looks set to rival the tremendous effort bottled in 2015. Enticing scents of crushed stone, pencil shavings and cassis appear on the nose (it ages in 100% new oak), and while this full-bodied wine packs plenty of power, it also shows characteristic granite-derived restraint, delivering a tense balance between ripeness and structure. It should be a beauty, but give it time, as the tannins are prominent at this early stage of its evolution.JD93+93–95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022 Coming from a cooler, granite terroir just above Tournon, the 2019 Saint Joseph Vignes De L’Hospice is a serious, age-worthy beauty, and I always find a certain Hermitage-like character in wines from this vineyard. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, it has masses of tannins as well as remarkable purity, and ample fruit and concentration. The aromatics lean toward the blue end of the spectrum, but it’s a mineral-laced, peppery, beautiful Saint Joseph in the making. A solid 4–6 years, if not more, of bottle age are recommended. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 15, 2006 Shows the exotic ripeness of the vintage, with a blast of blackberry and boysenberry confiture aromas and flavors, quickly followed by mocha, vanilla bean and dark coffee notes. Dark finish has tons of grip and smoky toast, leaving a broad, rather than precise impression. Best from 2008 through 2025.RP91+91–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Dec 2004 The 2003 Hermitage Le Meal Estate’s dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by aromas of gun flint, crushed rocks, black currants, and acacia flowers. This is an elegant yet medium to full-bodied Hermitage with significant character as well as length. Anticipated maturity: 2009–2025.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Apr 2022 I also tasted the 2020 Finca Sandoval, which is 80% Syrah from their best plots with 15% Bobal and 5% Moravia Agria that give it more freshness. It fermented with 40% full clusters and matured in large oak foudre for 18 months. This is very northern Rhône Syrah, with intense varietal aromas of violets, dark berries, smoked bacon, tapenade and a touch of tar, à la Gonon. It’s juicy, powerful and balanced, with very fine tannins, combining concentration with elegance. This has to be the finest Finca Sandoval and one of the purest expressions of Syrah in Spain. Bravo! 8,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 Brilliant violet color. Smoke-accented aromas of cherry, blackberry, violet and olive show very good freshness and are joined by a spicy nuance that builds in the glass. Silky in texture and sharply focused, offering spice-laced red and blue fruit flavors and a deeper licorice note. The peppery quality comes back on the long, clinging finish that’s shaped by discreet, even tannins. (Josh Raynolds)
WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2022 Ebullient, grapey and jammy, this blackberry-saturated wine is loaded with broad, ripe and drinkable fruit flavors on a smooth texture backed by light tannins. (Jim Gordon)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021 The 2020 Syrah Whole Bunch offers well-defined red fruit on the nose, a real doppelganger for a fine Rhône, classic in style with floral scents emerging with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is silky-smooth, delivering supple tannins, fine acidity and a caressing, irresistibly peppery finish. This is a gorgeous Syrah from Gabrielskloof.
