You say Syrah, and I say Shiraz. Wine lovers will tell you they're the same grape, just from different settings. The Australian red wine, Shiraz, burst onto the scene in the 1990's and remains popular to this day, and it's hard to believe it's made from the same grape that's used to make the famous red wines of France's Northern Rhône. Thanks to the vastly different climates and terroir in those two places, the grape produces vastly different wines.
Other regions are having some success with Syrah/Shiraz wine, as well. California, South Africa, Chile, and others have created some stellar bottles in recent years.
If you're in the market for a red wine - Shiraz, Syrah...whatever you want to call it - look no further than WineMadeEasy.com!

JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 9, 2022 A young wine with superb depth and polish that shows great depth and brightness. Full and focused with blue fruit and long, fine tannins that are compact and energetic. Slate. Graphite. Sophisticated and curated. So beautiful to try now, but be patient and open after 2026.JD96+96–98 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021 A blend of 94% Syrah and 6% Petite Sirah, the 2018 Relentless looks to be just about sensational, offering a dense purple color as well as rich, loaded notes of blackberries, currants, smoked meats, peppery spice, and violets. Reminding me of a great Cornas on steroids with its gamy, exotic character paired with beautiful richness, it has fabulous purity, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. This will undoubtedly be a great vintage for this cuvée, and my money is on it being one of the best yet. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2018 Relentless is silky and polished. In 2018 the blend includes a relatively high percentage of Petit Syrah, but the wine does not taste like that at all. Ripe red/purplish berry fruit, lavender, rose petal, black pepper and sweet spice are laced into the super-expressive finish. This might be the most refined Relentless ever. (Antonio Galloni)SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2022 A compelling blend that marries deep structure with richness and polish. Features accents of black cherry, grilled anise and smoked pepper, with refined tannins on the finish. Syrah and Petite Sirah. Drink now through 2032. 3,300 cases made. (Tim Fish)RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Nov 2019 Deep purple-black colored, the 2018 Relentless is a barrel-sample blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Petite Sirah. It sings of crushed black cherries, mulberries and black plums plus cracked pepper, garrigue, lavender, Indian spices and licorice hints. The palate is full-bodied, firm, spicy and energetic with rounded tannins and a long, peppery finish. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - March 22, 2021 Based on 74% Syrah and 26% Grenache brought up in in a combination of concrete tanks (for the Grenache) and one year old demi-muids (for the Syrah), the 2018 Cotes Du Roussillon Bastide Miraflors is a knockout bottle of wine. It offers loads of black fruits, roasted herbs, peppered meat, violets, and bacon fat as well as full-bodied richness, a round, opulent style, ripe tannins, and a blockbuster finish. It’s one of the finest values out there. (Jeb Dunnuck)Premier SelectPremier Select wines are handpicked by our staff from amongst thousands of wines for their exceptional quality. WS9595 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 06/22 Robert Eden pulls this wine from his biodynamically tended vineyards in the rocky, windy highlands of La Livinière. A blend of syrah with grenache and carignan, it’s a wine you can sink your teeth into, and it responds with juicy black fruit, spicy and fresh, and notes of mint, licorice and rose. Vinified in cement eggs and vats, it retains a sense of cool, stony clarity that brings light to its darkness and beams them into long-lasting fragrance. It’s at once firmly structured and ethereal, a balance that makes it addictive as well as potentially long-lived.
JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/26/2021 Another magical wine in the lineup, the 2019 No 8 is Syrah-based, with 9% Mourvèdre and 3% Viognier. There should be a little over 800 cases produced, and it was 55% destemmed and is still resting in 65% new French oak. I love its freshness and elegance, and it’s one of those rare incredibly hedonistic yet seamless, weighty wines that does everything right. Pure cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, and white pepper slowly emerge on the nose, and it’s full-bodied, with perfect balance and a great, great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021 Deep purple-black in color, notes of stewed plums, ripe boysenberries and juicy blackberries charge out of the gate, followed by hints of root beer, smoked meats, black truffles and hoisin. The full-bodied palate has beautiful freshness with a provocative peppery note and bags of ripe, rich black fruits, finishing long and spicy. Due to be bottled in mid-August 2021, 850 cases and a few magnums will be made.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 Inky ruby. Oak-spiced dark fruit preserves, candied licorice and mocha on the expansive nose. Smooth, broad and appealingly sweet, offering weighty cassis, singed plum and cherry-vanilla flavors and a touch of smokiness. Velvety tannins make a late appearance and frame a persistent finish that echoes the cassis and vanilla notes. (Josh Raynolds)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 A stylish red that’s fresh and focused, showing expressive aromas and flavors of blackberry, dried lavender, espresso and iron in a well-knit, medium- to full-bodied frame. The long, creamy finish is loaded with spice box and sweet smoke accents. Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier. Drink now through 2027. 10,545 cases made, 6,800 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, January 24, 2022 This is a soft and fruity red with some reserve and freshness that gives it a medium body with subtle chocolate, tobacco and berry flavors. Medium finish., 73% syrah, 11% grenache, 8% cinsault, 7% cabernet sauvignon and 1% viognier. Vegan. Drink now.RP90+90+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Jun 2022 Perhaps one of the most floral vintages that I’ve seen in a while, the 2020 Chocolate Block is a blend of 73% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Viognier. The nose is robust, juicy and expressive with hints of bramble, red and black spice and elegant purple flowers. Medium to full-bodied, the mouthfeel displays a balanced structure with focused tannins and lifting acidity that frames the mid-palate. Then wine finishes with a delightfully lingering, fruit-forward essence with a kiss of tar, roses and baked rocks. This will have no challenges making it until its 10th birthday. 2,982 barrels were produced. Give it a try.VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021 The 2020 The Chocolate Block has a clean, well-defined bouquet of red plum and black currant, plus touches of tangerine in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, plush and generous, with supple tannins and a very smooth, espresso-tinged finish. It’s no wonder The Chocolate Block has such wide appeal across the world.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2021 Wild berry, anise-infused plum and black cherry flavors are fleshy and juicy, with notes of chocolate-covered espresso bean and fresh rosemary lingering on the finish. Drink now. 25,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Impeccably balanced and refined yet plump with personality, this red offers multilayered blueberry and huckleberry flavors accented by black olive and smoky cracked pepper. Finishes with rich, polished tannins. Drink now through 2030. 237 cases made. (Tim Fish)JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 9, 2022 A tad reductive on the nose, so be sure to let this breathe. Hot stones, wild herbs, ripe plums, blackberries and vanilla on the nose. Full-bodied with fine tannins. Vibrant and complex. Atop the core of ripe dark fruit there is ground baking spice, oregano and white pepper. Very steady. Drink or hold.WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2022 Fruit and barrel intertwine on the aromas, with notes of char, roasted coffee bean, vanilla and dark fruit. The palate is creamy in feel, showing intensity and sophistication. Baking spice notes linger on the finish. Oak plays a prominent part but plays it well. (Sean P. Sullivan)JD91+91+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/9/2022 Ripe black fruits, smoked herbs, graphite, and spicy, peppery herb and floral notes emerge from the 2018 Syrah Baby Bear, a medium-bodied, elegant, incredibly pretty, balanced Syrah that can be drunk today or cellared for 8–10 years. This estate continues to play at a very high level, and this is another terrific wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 02/22 This burly wine has so much richness that, in all your luxuriating over it, you may overlook the woodland scents of mushrooms, the amaro flavors and foresty tannins. Winemaker Daniel Wampfler has managed to build a great deal of complexity into a big syrah.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2021 Packed with dark fig, boysenberry and blackberry fruit, this pumps along with ample depth and drive, picking up licorice snap, roasted applewood and dark tea notes along the way. Nice energy through the finish too, thanks to an underlying iron note. Drink now through 2030. 1,000 cases made, 150 cases imported. (James Molesworth)JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/5/2021 Leading off the reds, the 2019 Crozes-Hermitage Vieilles Vignes offers a dense purple color as well as ripe, powerful notes of smoked red and black fruits, scorched earth, chocolate, and a touch of smoke meat. It’s rich, medium to full-bodied, and balanced. (Jeb Dunnuck)
