Piedmont (or Piemonte in Italian) is one of the most popular Italian wine regions and is located in the northwest corner of Italy in the foothills of the Alps.
The red Nebbiolo grape is king in the hilly region called Langhe. The famed wines of Barolo and Barbaresco are made totally from Nebbiolo. The grape creates a sneaky combination of finesse and power; aromatic, delicate aromas of rose petals, yet with distinctly muscular palate-staining tannins. Other red wines produced in the region are usually made from the Barbera and Dolcetto grape.
Currently some of the most popular wines of Italy with many consumers are sweet ones named after the area called Asti. "Asti Spumante" is made by the charmat method of production in which the wines undergo secondary fermentation in tank and then are bottled under pressure. They wines typically use a Champagne-style cork enclosure. Moscato d'Asti also is produced in this region and is made in a frizzante or slightly-sparkling style.
The dry white wines of Piedmont are typically made from Arneis or Cortese. Some wines made with Cortese are often labeled "Gavi" after the area in Piedmont in which they are made.
JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, December 1, 2022 Beautiful aromas of plums and violets with some flint. Full-bodied. Layered and softly chewy. Meat, berry and hints of cedar and nutmeg. Flavorful finish. Solid and very together with a softness at the back of the palate. Drink in 2026 and beyond.RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022 The La Spinetta 2019 Barbaresco Starderi Vürsù is perfumed and bright with dark rose and wild plum. The wine is solid and dense, with a pretty presentation of fruit that feels healthy and crunchy at the same time. The tannins are well integrated into this structured, full-bodied Barbaresco. The Starderi has shown a very consistent performance over the years. These releases from La Spinetta are all packaged in big, heavy glass bottles. (Monica Larner)SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2022 A powerful red, yet well-defined too, with strawberry, cherry, floral, mineral and tobacco aromas and flavors aligned to a muscular structure. Feels balanced overall, yet will take a few years to fully integrate. Best from 2026 through 2045. 580 cases made, 45 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo Baudana is such a gorgeous wine. It, too conveys the power of Serralunga, but with a bit less heft than is typically the case. Sweet dark cherry, iron, cedar, rose petal, mint and white pepper give the 2017 its effusive, inviting personality. This is such a tremendous showing.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021 The 2017 Barolo Gramolere is broad and ample, yet retains the gracious style that is typical of the Manzone Barolos these days. The fruit profile is a bit darker, though, and there is a bit more of an oak imprint. Black cherry, new leather, menthol and spice all meld together effortlessly as the 2017 blossoms with a touch of aeration.
Barbera del Monferrato 2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56090
SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021 Macerated plum, loam and almond flavors mark this dense, rustic red, which is fresh, ending with earth and underbrush accents. Drink now. 6,000 cases imported.
RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020 The Margherita Otto 2016 Barolo (with 3,600 bottles produced) is a firm and tightly knit expression with a solid center of gravity. The wine offers a dark and robust textural fabric with a pretty interlay of dark fruit, dried cherry, plum, licorice, crushed rock and balsam herb. You get the full package of Nebbiolo aromas, presented with elegance grace and careful balance. Thanks to that slightly darker character, I’d pair this pretty Barolo with an autumnal dish served locally that involves white truffles from Alba.
WE8686 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2006 Creamy froth is short-lived but the peach and mineral notes come through clean and sharp followed by zest and soothing swetness in the mouth. One of Italy’s most recognized brands presents its most famous sweet sparkler; that’s always a joy to revisit.

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 The 2017 Barolo Monprivato is elegant, classy and nuanced. Crushed red berry fruit, spice and blood orange lend and exotic flair to this silky, mid-weight Barolo. The 2017 loses some of its persistence with air, but it offers tons of immediacy and sheer allure. Best of all, the 2017 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is one of the better recent vintages of Monprivato the Mascarello family has released.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo Parussi is a classic Castiglione Falletto Barolo. Sweet floral notes and bright, red berry fruit open first as the 2017 shows off its considerable charms. Medium in body and silky (for the year), with exceptional balance, the 2017 Parussi is stellar. This is an unbelievably classy Barolo.RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Massolino 2017 Barolo Parussi is a standout in this portfolio of wines mainly from Serralunga d’Alba. Thanks to its protective positioning at the center of the appellation where it draws upon the soils and exposures of the surrounding areas, Castiglione Falletto performs very nicely in a vintage that saw extreme weather with frost and drought. What the Parussi brings to the table is more focus and sharpness, with red fruits, crushed rose, cooling limestone mineral and some dried mint.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 This wine represents a blend of fruit from Arborina and Gattera in La Morra and Castelletto in Monforte d’Alba. The Mauro Veglio 2017 Barolo opens to a light garnet-ruby color with a glossy shine and a classic aromatic profile of wild berry, tar, licorice and crushed blue flowers. The 2017 vintage is a bit thinner in the mid-palate, but this expression demonstrates good tannic management. Production stands at 25,000 bottles.VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo is a delicious entry-level offering. All the elements just fall into place effortlessly. Sweet red cherry, cedar, dried flowers and spice give this lilting, open-knit Barolo lovely aromatic and flavor complexity.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo Castelletto is fabulous. It is also the wine in this range that feels the least marked by heat. Red/purplish fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and lavender all grace this beautifully translucent, expressive Barolo. There is some tannin that needs to soften — this is Monforte after all — but all the elements are impeccably balanced.RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 Dried flowers, potpourri and aromas of crushed stone open the bouquet of the 2017 Barolo Castelletto. This is a nicely balanced expression of Nebbiolo that shows some heat, intensity and density but also leaves room for nuanced tones of spice, crushed white pepper and limestone. This is an elegant and lasting wine from the not-always-easy 2017 vintage. In the end, this edition of the Castelletto offers a terrific interpretation of a hot and dry vintage. This was another release of 6,500 bottles.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019 The 2015 Barolo Gattera is the darkest and most concentrated of these wines from Mauro Veglio. It shows thick texture and richness with some pretty floral and raspberry notes and cherry sweetness on the close. This wine is the most equipped to travel the long haul. About 8,500 bottles are produced.VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019 Another attractive wine in the range, the 2015 Barolo Gattera is ample, creamy and expansive, with all of the textural resonance that is so typical of wines from this La Morra site. Dark cherry, chocolate, licorice and spice are some of the many aromas and flavors that build in a racy, succulent Barolo that will drink well pretty much upon release. As is so often the case, the Gattera is the softest of the Veglio Barolos.
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/1994 This is the second year in a row this wine has won a World Championship. It is a bubbly rife with the heady, highly grapey pleasures of the Muscat grape and a profusion of invigorating bubbles. A trifle sweet with nice crisp acidity giving it an elegant mouthfeel. Perfect for an aperitif, it tastes like biting into a ripe peach. Low in alcohol and a great value to boot.WS8585 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 1993 Ripe apricot and raisin aromas lend complexity to this drier style of Asti — still sweet, but the nutty bitterness in the finish gives a dry impression. A complete Italian dessert.

VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020 The 2017 Gattinara is terrific. It will also give readers something to drink without waiting decades. In 2017, the Gattinara is a bit richer than it often is — the result of the warm dry year — but its profile is super-classic. Sweet pipe tobacco, mint, dried herbs, licorice, dried cherry and Alpine herbs fill out its ample frame effortlessly. I would give the 2017 a few years in bottle, but it won’t need more than that to start drinking well. In 2017, Roberto Conterno did not bottle his vineyard-designates. Instead, all the best lots went into the straight Gattinara, an overachieving wine that delivers the goods. I don’t expect the 2017 will be among the most long-lived wines here, but that will hardly be an issue for most readers.
VN96+96+ pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020 Tasted next to the Valferana, the 2016 Gattinara Vigna Molsino is much more nervous in feel. Iron, dried herbs, sweet dried cherry, mint, crushed rocks, white pepper and earthy notes give the Molsino a good deal of aromatic complexity to match its intense, saline-infused minerality. Today, though, the tannins and acids are almost overpowering. Readers will find an old-school, classically austere Gattinara that needs 10–15 years to be at its best. The 2016 is an absolute jewel of a wine, but it should be purchased only by readers with either very good genes are a ton of optimism regarding their own longevity.RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021 This wine was not produced in 2017, so the next vintage in this mini vertical is the 2016 Gattinara Vigna Molsino. The name “Molsino” is a dialect derivative of the Italian word for “soft,” and it comes from the pretty contours of the hills that characterize the Gattinara landscape and the warm, lightly windy and sunny microclimate that this specific growing site enjoys. Indeed, the wine offers rich fruit flavors of wild berry and blackcurrant with solid structure and firmness. Pretty notes of pressed violet, earth and iron ore also appear. This Nebbiolo plays a hand similar to Barolo in terms of its inner power and its superior aging potential.
