RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022 Opening to dark flavors of ripe cherry, plum and blackberry, the Ascheri 2021 Langhe Barbera Fontanelle is fruity, full and generous. This is a balanced Barbera that wraps smoothly over the palate, imparting lots of luscious dark fruit flavors along the way. The wine never feels too heavy or ripe, and it could easily match a classic breaded veal cutlet alla Milanese. Some 25,000 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2023 A lush red, with aromas of juniper, graphite and spice that make way for plum and blackberry fruit. Charming and harmonious, with lively acidity and density on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2026. 3,500 cases made, 200 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Barbera d’Alba is a soft, open-knit wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. In 2020, the Barbera is on the lighter side, as is typical for the year. There is lovely purity to the red berry, spice and floral notes. And of course, plenty of charm.
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 From Verduno and Roddi and aged only in large cask to keep the freshness of the Barbera, the 2021 Barbera D’Alba is charming, with a sweet perfume of candied flowers and blackberries. Medium-bodied, with a silky texture, ripe plum fruit, and fresh acidity, it also has a great finish. Balanced and harmonious, this is a lovely Barbera—I would drink this. (Audrey Frick)VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 The 2021 Barbera d’Alba is bright, effusive and charming. Crushed flowers, vibrant red-toned fruit, spice and mocha are all amplified in this joyous, youthfully exuberant Barbera. Medium in body and exuberant, the Barbera is an absolute delight. Vineyard sites are in Verduno and Roddi. Aging is in cask. The Barbera is often one of my favorite wines in this range, as it is again in 2021. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Barbera d’Alba Aves is a gorgeous wine. Over the last few years, Fabio Alessandria has dialed back the overtness in the Aves, which yields a much more refined wine than in the past. In 2020, the Aves is especially restrained and also not that far stylistically than the straight Barbera. I would drink it over the next few years, while the fruit is vibrant. The Aves is a selection of fruit from vineyards in Verduno and Roddi. It sees about ten months in 500L barrels, including some acacia in the mix. This super-classic Barbera is a jewel of a wine.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Aves is a selection of the estate’s best Barbera. A wine of gravitas and tension, the Aves is lights-out in 2021. There’s plenty of the depth of past editions, but less overt concentration and oak imprint than in the past. In the last few years, Fabio Alessandria has dialed back some of the textural intensity in this wine in favor of greater freshness. The result is a striking Barbera that is also more in line with the rest of the wines in the range. (Antonio Galloni)JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 Pouring a bit more in the purple range of the spectrum and from a single tonneau, the 2021 Barbera D’Alba Aves (“aves” means birds in Latin) has more peppery spice, violets, and wet stone. It is medium-bodied but takes on more concentration and richness, with meaty black cherry, turned soil, and tea leaf notes. It also has fine tannins and a good finish. This will be an age-worthy wine for drinking over the next ten years. (Audrey Frick)
VN88+88–90 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2017 The 2016 The Bird Flora & Fauna Red, a blend of Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Grignolino and Freisa, five Piedmontese varieties one does not exactly see every day in California. Bold red cherry, tobacco, dried herb and anise flavors abound in this rustic, yet pleasing, everyday red.

SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021 Macerated plum, loam and almond flavors mark this dense, rustic red, which is fresh, ending with earth and underbrush accents. Drink now. 6,000 cases imported.

WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2021 This big but smooth wine offers nicely concentrated black-fruit flavors and oak accents of cedar, vanilla and cinnamon. The luxurious texture is rounded by the ripe flavors.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Serra is an absolute delight. Pliant, silky and creamy, the 2021 offers terrific depth and tons of character. Vibrant red berry fruit, spice, mint and orange peel are some of the many notes that come together in this very pretty, articulate Barbera. I love the freshness and vibrancy here. What a beautiful wine this is. (Antonio Galloni)
WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/22 With its bright magenta color, bountiful dark berry flavors and zippy acidity, this wine is bouncy and joyful from start to finish. It offers good concentration and verve while avoiding the excessive alcohol that sometimes marks this variety, making it an excellent partner for a wide range of dishes.VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 The 2021 Barbera d’Alba is an explosion of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and mocha. A healthy dollop of whole clusters (30%) adds an element of savoriness that takes a little getting used to, as it is not often seen in Barbera. Vinification and aging in cement yields a juicy Barbera in which the fruit is front and center. (Antonio Galloni)
