Napa Valley wines are without question the most famous and important wines from the United States, even though the Napa Valley wine region is actually one of the smallest in the world. Some of the most iconic and recognizable Napa Valley Wineries include Beaulieu Vineyards, Beringer, Cliff Lede, Dominus, Hess, Robert Mondavi Winery, Opus One, and Sterling.
While Napa Valley itself is an appellation there are also sixteen sub-appellations or American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). The climate and terrain of these sub-appellations — including Los Carneros, St. Helena, Stags Leap District, and others — are actually quite diverse, ranging from rugged mountains to cooler coastal influences, and many nuances in-between.
Most Napa wine is made with premium varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel
JD97+97+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/21/2021 Riper and more voluptuous, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard is a selection from the estate vineyard and a smaller production release. It has a wealth of ripe black fruits, smoke tobacco, chocolate, and violets, with more lead pencil and earthy nuances emerging with time in the glass. Concentrated, full-bodied, yet balanced and incredibly pure, it’s another terrific, seamless wine from this estate readers will love. I like it today, but give bottles a year or three and enjoy over the following 20+. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019 Two percent of the Malbec in the blend this year comes from the 2018 vintage. Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder bursts out of the glass with vivacious black currants, black cherries and wild blueberries notes with touches of dark chocolate, licorice, violets and cloves. Full-bodied, firm and very finely grained in terms of texture, the palate explodes with fruit and freshness, finishing very long and wonderfully fragrant. Impressive! 2,807 cases produced.SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2020 This offers blackberry, boysenberry and açaí berry compote flavors that sparkle with anise, sassafras and sage accents. Shows serious tarry grip, but that recedes into the fruit as this airs in the glass, leaving embers of singed juniper and alder at the very end. Best from 2023 through 2040. 2,700 cases made.JD93+93+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2020 The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is a richer, broader, more concentrated wine, yet it also has a serious amount of tannins. Lots of dark chocolate, blackcurrant, forest floor, and espresso notes all emerge from this full-bodied, concentrated, impressive effort that’s going to benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age and have 20+ years of longevity. The blend is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% each of Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD98+98+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is an incredible wine, and it flirts with perfection. Full-bodied and concentrated, it has flawless balance and elegance as well as just textbook Howell Mountain notes of blue fruits, cassis, violets, graphite, and background oak. I love its tannins, it has remarkable purity of fruit, and a great, great finish. It has some appeal today yet deserves 4–5 years of bottle age and should have over two decades of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, April 4, 2023 Notes of dark spices, cocoa and bark with ripe blackberries and plums on offer. Full-bodied with ripe, succulent dark and blue fruit coated with velvety tannins. Plush and lingering with a spicy finish and some earthiness to it. Better from 2025. (James Suckling)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2021 Sleek, with cassis and plum notes laced with subtle alder and tobacco notes. The polished finish has a pretty flicker of savory. Drink now through 2027. 50,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022 Fresh, direct and focused, with red currant and cherry coulis notes that race through, dotted with savory, floral and tobacco accents. Judicious toast lets the fruit play out, and there’s solid energy throughout. Drink now through 2030. 44,700 cases made. (James Molesworth)JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, May 5, 2022 Redcurrant and tile with some clove. Dark stone, too. Medium-bodied with some fresh herbs and dried thyme. Medium, ripe tannins. Fresh, creamy finish. A blend of 93% cabernet sauvignon with petite sirah and cabernet franc. Drink or hold.WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2022 This well-balanced, moderately tannic wine offers black fruits, oak spice and a lightly gripping texture, all in good proportions. It’s a pleasurable wine that shows the typical, attractive black cherries, black olives and hints of baking spices. (Jim Gordon)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2022 Ripe and well-built, with a solid core of blackberry, black currant and melted black licorice notes that move in unison, picking up a subtle singed alder hint on the focused finish, with subtle juicy energy running all the way through. Best from 2023 through 2034. 4,400 cases made.
WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/21 When Mike Grgich made the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay—the white wine that won the Paris Tasting—he used fruit from the Bacigalupi Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. He soon moved into a partnership with Austin Hills, assembling an organically farmed estate that includes 88 acres in Carneros and 163 in American Canyon, the cool, southern districts of the Napa Valley where this chardonnay grows. Now, at 98, Grgich leaves winegrowing to his nephew, Ivo Jeramaz, who produced this complex and compelling wine. Put aside any preconceptions you might have about contemporary Napa Valley chardonnay; consider instead an agriculture that might include native corn (one taster cited the ethereal sweetness of nixtamalized corn) and stone-fruit orchards (a scent of apricots). There’s the smokiness of ancho chile and a scent of woodland mushrooms in the wine’s dark-toned leesiness. Then the layers of flavor last, harmonious and delicious.JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 4, 2021 Mangoes, papayas, cooked lemons, ripe melons, gun smoke and salted caramel on the nose. Full-bodied, ripe and rich yet bright. Smoky, toasty notes to close. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2020 Enticing, with the frankly ripe profile of the vintage showing off in a display of slightly exotic plum and blackberry coulis flavors, while dark licorice, menthol and sassafras notes course through. Sweet spice accents sparkle through the finish, revealing a lingering hint of singed juniper. The long finish features rippling acidity. Best from 2022 through 2038. 2,300 cases made.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 5, 2021 A plush, full-bodied red with currant, olive, walnut and chocolate-nut character. It’s full and layered with so much unctuous fruit, but not heavy nor overpowering. Delicious and satisfying now, but will age nicely.VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Jayson is a dark, bold and delicious wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Ripe red cherry, plum, mocha, spice and new leather are front and center in this tasty, inviting red. There is certainly plenty to like. (Antonio Galloni)JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Jayson, which spent 18 months in 88% new French oak, offers a textbook Napa nose of ripe cherries, plums, scorched earth, and leather. Beautiful on the palate as well, it’s full-bodied, has a lush, mouth-filling texture, nicely integrated oak, and polished tannins. It’s up with the top wines at the price and is well worth seeking out. It’s going to keep for at least 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Sep 2022 Pahlmeyer’s 2019 Jayson Cabernet Sauvignon features notes of vanilla, cedar and black cherries—just a wonderfully harmonious swirl of flavors. It’s full-bodied, rich and velvety, maybe a bit open-knit, but delicious and fun to drink. (Joe Czerwinski)SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022 Packs hefty cassis, plum sauce and blackberry preserves, with an ample dose of warm cocoa and singed vanilla. Everything melds steadily through the broad finish. Shows more oomph than purity, though. For fans of the style. Best from 2023 through 2030. 4,100 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021 The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée, which includes a splash of Merlot (3%), shines for its beautiful elegance and purity, with lots of blue fruits, violets, orange blossom, and lead pencil aromas and flavors. Tasting like a mini Grand Vin, it’s full-bodied, with ripe, present tannins, and certainly has the classic, noble style that’s the hallmark of this estate. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2018 Estate Cuvée is silky and supremely elegant right from the very first taste. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine. Soaring Cabernet aromatics meld into a core of inky red/purplish berry fruit, with hints of spice, sweet tobacco and cedar. Simply put, the Estate Cuvée is a total knock-out.RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th Nov 2020 Composed of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée is deep garnet-purple colored. It was aged in 55% new French oak, 18% new Hungarian oak and 27% second fill French oak. It bursts from the glass with rambunctious black cherry compote, blueberry pie and crushed blackcurrant scents, plus hints of menthol, baker’s chocolate and cedar chest. Medium-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid structure of grainy tannins and fantastic freshness supporting the muscular fruit, finishing long with a red-fruited skip in its step. 425 cases were made.
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021 A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain was aged for 22 months in oak barrels, 84% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it explodes from the glass with bombastic black currants, black cherries and boysenberries notes plus underlying hints of violets, dark chocolate and tobacco leaf. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and fragrant. 3,997 cases were made.JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, April 6, 2021 Aromas of pine needles, asphalt, graphite and black fruit follow through to a full-bodied and chewy palate with so much tannin, giving this real Howell Mountain character. It goes on and one. Muscular and in need of time in the bottle to soften. Better after 2024.VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerful, tightly wound wine that captures all the natural intensity of Howell Mountain. Blackberry jam, graphite, smoke ,iron and crushed rocks give this dark, massively tannic Cabernet a lot of character. Even after having been opened for several hours, the 2018 remains forbidding, with serious tannins that are going to require a good bit of cellaring before the wine becomes approachable.
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/21/2021 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is brilliant and has classic varietal aromas and flavors of cassis and dark currants as well as tobacco, cedar pencil, espresso, and spring flowers. With medium to full body, a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, silky tannins, and impeccable balance, it’s well worth seeking out and a multi-bottle purchase. I’d certainly be thrilled to have bottles in the cellar. It will have 15–20 years of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/21/2021 First made in 2009 (the first vintage of Maybach was in 2004), the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Amoenus offers an incredible, full-bodied, pure, seamless style, and I suspect this is the finest vintage of this cuvée ever made. Gorgeous red and black fruits, toasted spice, brioche, violets, and flowers are just some of the nuances here, and it’s one of those wines that brings massive richness and depth while staying pure, seamless, and as graceful as they come. Don’t miss it! (Jeb Dunnuck)RP96+96–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 18th Mar 2021 A barrel sample, the 2019 Amoenus Cabernet Sauvignon displays a medium to deep garnet-purple color, leaping from the glass with vibrant scents of redcurrant jelly, black cherry compote, cassis and mulberries, plus suggestions of wild sage, black olives and damp soil. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a wonderfully plush texture with bags of black and red berry preserves layers and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy.
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 7, 2022 Blackberries and black currants with grape skin, lead pencil and pine cone. Full-bodied with round tannins and juicy fruit. Tamed tannins. Bright finish. Classy and authentic. Beautiful now, but will age beautifully.RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 The only one of the Mt Brave wines that isn’t 100% varietal, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder includes 4% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. Offering hints of sage and lavender entwined among waves of cassis, this full-bodied wine may not be as broad or expansive in the mouth as the La Jota, but it also might be a touch juicier and longer on the finish. (Joe Czerwinski)SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022 Very dark and winey in profile, with steeped plum, blackberry and boysenberry fruit flavors laced with licorice snap, bramble and apple wood. A tarry note underscores the finish, while the fruit drips. A big wine balanced by inner purity. Best from 2024 through 2038. 7,699 cases made. (James Molesworth)
