Napa Valley wines are without question the most famous and important wines from the United States, even though the Napa Valley wine region is actually one of the smallest in the world. Some of the most iconic and recognizable Napa Valley Wineries include Beaulieu Vineyards, Beringer, Cliff Lede, Dominus, Hess, Robert Mondavi Winery, Opus One, and Sterling.
While Napa Valley itself is an appellation there are also sixteen sub-appellations or American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). The climate and terrain of these sub-appellations — including Los Carneros, St. Helena, Stags Leap District, and others — are actually quite diverse, ranging from rugged mountains to cooler coastal influences, and many nuances in-between.
Most Napa wine is made with premium varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel
JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022 Incredible purity and precision, as well as opulence, define the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select, and this is as good as any Cabernet Sauvignon in the world today. Revealing a deep purple hue as well as a thrilling bouquet of pure crème de cassis, black raspberries, spring flowers, lead pencil shavings, and an incredible minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, seamless texture, ample mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This is classic 2018 Napa Valley with its purity, freshness and precision as well as sensational concentration and perfectly integrated acidity, tannins, and alcohol. It delivers pleasure today yet warrants a solid 4–5 years of bottle age and is going to be a 30- to 40-year wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)JS9999 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, February 7, 2022 So much black licorice in this, together with tar, blackcurrants, blackberries and slate. Full-bodied, but very toned and focused, with polish and energy. Extremely fine tannins and wonderful length. All about balance and purity. Gorgeous now, but this will age for decades to come. Great finish. Better after 2026.RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021 Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select displays a deep garnet-purple color. It charges out of the gate with bold crème de cassis, blueberry pie and black cherry preserves notes, plus hints of smoked meats, fragrant earth and tar, with a fragrant waft of violets and Provence herbs. Full-bodied, the palate is packed with muscular black fruits, supported by a solid foundation of firm, grainy tannins and compelling freshness, finishing long with an enticing herbal lift. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 Just as it was from barrel, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is stunning. Bright acids give the 2018 tons of energy. This is an especially mid-weight, refined Hillside Select that is all class. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, mint and blood orange build in the glass. Elegant and bright, the 2018 shows all the energy of the year in spades. (Antonio Galloni)SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Frankly ripe but well-focused, with blackberry and creamed boysenberry notes flowing through atop the polished structure, while cocoa and black licorice frame the finish. A subtle hint of sassafras lingers at the end, adding textural nuance. This has the stuffing to age well. Drink now through 2038. 2,400 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022 An incredible value, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon TD-9 includes slightly more Merlot and is 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 11% Malbec and the rest Petit Verdot. Round, sexy, full-bodied, and opulent, it has terrific aromatics of red and black currants, tobacco, chocolate, and lead pencil shavings. Drink this hedonistic yet balanced, elegant beauty over the coming 10–12 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, February 7, 2022 Aromas of blackberries with old spice, dark cherries and cloves, following through to a medium to full body with a sold core of ripe fruit and a creamy and stony underlying character. Juicy and rich, yet not overbearing. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec and petit verdot. Drinkable now, but better in 2025.RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021 The 2019 Red Blend TD-9 is a blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 11% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, alluring notes of mocha, tapenade and truffles jump from the glass, backed up by a core of cassis and stewed plums. Full-bodied, juicy and plush in the mouth, it has a lively line and a wonderfully pure, fruity finish. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2022 Polished and direct, with a beam of cassis and plum puree flavors flanked by singed vanilla. Features a flash of sweet tobacco on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2026. 9,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2013 The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Padrone (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) boasts a blockbuster nose of blackberries, blueberries, camphor and acacia flowers. Sweet tannins and a wonderful sucrosity and ripeness on the palate conceal some serious structure. This pure, long, full, rich wine possesses lots of black fruits as well as an impressive finish that lasts nearly 45 seconds. It should be consumed over the next 15–20 years.WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2014 This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, grown in the winery’s estate vineyard, on the east side of Napa Valley. It’s awesomely rich and ripe, delivering heady blackberry, blueberry, cassis liqueur, cola and new oak flavors that are as long in the finish as they are deep. With thick tannins, it’s clearly a wine you need to cellar. Drink 2016–2020 and beyond.
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016 The 2013 Proprietary Red Sloan is from the same 13 acres of estate vineyard. Typical of the vintage, it is spectacular, inky purple and massive, with unbelievably ripe fruit and a vibrancy and delineation that is breathtaking — given the richness and massiveness of this wine that is a true long-term prospect. It needs 5–6 years of further bottle age and should easily last 30–35 years. The notes of black truffle, charcoal, incense, blackberry and cassis fruit are followed by a full-bodied, stunningly proportioned wine that is loaded, incredibly pure and well-delineated. It is a killer effort from Sloan and probably capable of matching their great efforts in 2001, 2002 and 2007.VN97+97+ pts. - Vinous - Dec 2016 A huge, backward wine, the 2013 Sloan is deep, powerful and explosive, with huge dark fruit and tons of torrefaction, licorice and menthol notes that add gravitas. Readers will have to be patient with the 2013. All the pedigree of this great vintage is evident, but the tannins need time to soften. At times, the 2013 reminds me of the 2001.
VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2018 Sloan is a flat out stunner. Rich, dramatic and full-bodied, with striking energy, the 2018 is viscerally thrilling right out of the gate. Black cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and gravel all build as this towering, statuesque Cabernet shows off its pedigree. The 2018 is simply magical, and just as breathtaking from bottle as it was as a barrel sample last year. It is the very finest Sloan I have ever tasted. I can’t wait to see how it ages. (Antonio Galloni)JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/21/2021 I compared the 2018 Proprietary Red to a great vintage of Mouton Rothschild from barrel and I’m still happy with that comparison now from bottle. Sporting a dense purple hue as well as gorgeous aromatics of blackcurrants, chocolate, espresso, tobacco leaf, charcoal, and gravelly earth, this big, full-bodied, concentrated, tannic wine is flawlessly balanced, incredibly precise, and as pure and classy as they come. It needs to be forgotten for at least 5–7 years and will have 30–40 years of overall longevity. Bravo to the team at Sloan for another magical wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021 A blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2018 Proprietary Red displays and deep, vibrant garnet-purple color. Baked plums, blackberry pie, crème de cassis and toasty oak notes leap from the glass, followed by hints of tilled soil, Indian spices, mocha and crushed rocks. Big, full-bodied, opulent and velvety, it has a solid structure and a very long, seductively spicy finish.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 Reasonably priced for a Napa Cab, Snowden’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon The Ranch boasts aromas of cedar and cherries, plus delicate thyme and sage notes. It’s medium to full-bodied, plush and easy to drink, smooth and supple across the palate and silky on the finish. (Joe Czerwinski)VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon The Ranch is elegant and nuanced, with the transparency that is typical of many of the 2019s here. This is a decidedly old-school leaning Cabernet that leans towards the more delicate end of the spectrum. (Antonio Galloni)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 26th Dec 2012 A dark, sumptuous wine, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Somerston boasts stunning depth, power and richness. Mocha, chocolate, espresso and cloves flesh out in this intense, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. There is so much fruit, the tannins of the vintage are nearly buried. A full throttle, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2010 is a gorgeous wine from start to finish and a terrific example of the vintage. The 2010 is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2017–2030.
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019 Made of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple in color and prances out of the glass with vivacious blackberries, crushed black cherries, warm black currants and red currant jelly scents plus exotic hints of cassia, cardamom, fenugreek and star anise with a waft of underbrush. Medium-bodied, the palate has fantastic energy and beautiful poise, with bags of bright, crunchy black and red fruit plus a firm, fine-grained texture, finishing long and spicy.VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 Spottswoode’s 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon has been simply tremendous on both occasions I have tasted it so far. Sweet red cherry, red plum, flowers and mint give the 2017 striking freshness to complement its decidedly mid-weight structure. The intense heat of the vintage caused ripening to slow down and yielded a wine with just 13.7% alcohol, which is low for both the estate and Napa Valley in general. Spottswoode was one of the first estates in the valley to adopt a more moderate approach to farming and that really paid off in 2017, as a wine of this level in that year could have only resulted from impeccable farming. In a word: magnificent!JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2020 Looking at the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, which was bottled two months prior to my tasting, it too has a Château Margaux-like complexity and elegance, with beautiful notes of crème de cassis, sandalwood, dried flowers, tobacco leaf, and lead pencil. Harvested all pre-fire, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, silky tannins, and remarkable purity, all making for a quintessential Spottswoode that’s going to benefit from 3–5 years of bottle age and keep for 20+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 22, 2020 Features a sleek and racy edge, with damson plum, bitter cherry and black currant fruit working together, revealing pinpoints of savory, sage and iron scattered throughout. The mouthwatering finish shows the vintage’s slightly brambly grip, but with superior integration and energy to most of its peers. Best from 2022 through 2038. 4,019 cases made.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021 Dark and dense, with plum and blackberry compote notes forming the core while licorice root, juniper and sassafras notes fill in through the finish. There’s ample fruit in reserve here and a nice buried minerality. Just needs some cellaring to unfurl fully. Best from 2022 through 2036. 3,135 cases made.
JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2019 Still showing brilliantly (and I don’t expect that to change), the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has the ripe, expansive, sexy style of the vintage front and center. Loads of crème de cassis, blueberries, crushed violets, and spice all soar from this beauty, which is powerful and rich, yet perfectly balanced. At the same quality level as the 2013, it’s nevertheless in a much more approachable, flamboyant style. Drink it any time over the coming two decades or more. It’s a gorgeous, gorgeous wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018 Staglin’s 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is ripe, racy and voluptuous, which is to say very much in line with the style of the year. Kirsch, succulent red cherry, mint and spice add layers of nuance, but in this vintage it is the wine’s raciness and sweet, silky tannins that give the wine its forward, open-knit personality. Ripeness is pushed to the edge in the 2015, and yet all the elements flow together effortlessly. Even with all of its obvious ripeness an raciness, this is decidedly a mid-weight style of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2017 Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon has a decadent nose of warm blackcurrants, blackberry preserves and ripe black plums plus suggestions of chocolate box, baking spices, fertile loam and dried Mediterranean herbs. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with expressive black fruits and savory nuances. With a solid structure of chewy tannins and balanced freshness, it finishes long and earthy. This was tasted as a barrel sample.SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2018 Pure, rich, deep and balanced, well-centered on plush blackberry, wild berry, currant, black licorice, light oak and dusty earth flavors. Lets the fruit shine through, with oak in the background. Best from 2020 through 2024. 1,550 cases made.JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 19, 2018 This shows plenty of dark plums and spiced dark chocolate. Hints of orange skin and cloves, too. So deep and intense on the palate. Full body, round and velvety tannins and a powerful and bright finish. Drink or hold.
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 4, 2022 Lovely aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, ground spice and anise. Full-bodied with fine, silky tannins. Juicy and vibrant on the palate with lovely balance and intensity. Drinking well now, but can definitely age. Drink or hold.SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022 A textbook Napa Cabernet, with the vintage’s ripe, accessible cassis and blackberry puree profile on display, laced with singed vanilla and tobacco notes along the way. The generous finish lets a toasty edge play with the fruit. Drink now through 2031. 66,027 cases made. (James Molesworth)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2022 A bruiser, with concentrated blueberry, smoky meat and cracked pepper flavors that gather tension and tannins on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2030. 35,611 cases made. (Tim Fish)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018 The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon from Stone the Crows is beautifully polished and nuanced. Bright red cherry, pomegranate, kirsch, mint and wild flowers all develop with air, but it is the wine’s textural feel that stands out most. Silky tannins add to the wine’s considerable finesse. This is one of the more restrained 2015s readers will come across. I would prefer to give the 2015 at least a few years to allow the tannins to soften. Even at this early stage, though, the 2015 is compelling. This is a superb showing from proprietor Rick Talmadge and winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown.RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2017 The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Three Twins Vineyard is very deep inky purple in color and possesses a gorgeous blackcurrant cordial, blueberry tart and plum preserves nose, with touches of sandalwood, dried herbs, lavender and menthol plus a waft of cardamom. Full, concentrated, very pure, rich and vibrant, with velvety tannins and just enough freshness, it finishes long.
