ST93+93+? pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2014 Bright red-ruby. Sexy aromas of blackberry, violet and licorice, along with a musky soil-driven nuance. Rich, thick and sweet; wonderfully plush and seamless for a Bordeaux blend from this cool year, with a texture of liquid silk. Already very showy, this superb wine’s serious building tannins promise a slow evolution in bottle. A great expression of this outstanding vineyard, and seemingly even richer in the early going than the superb 2010 was a year ago.RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Jun 2014 One of the top wines in the vintage, the 2011 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard (52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot that spent 21 months in 35% new French oak) offers thrilling amounts of fruit and texture, with full-bodied richness, excellent mid-palate depth and sweet tannin. Loaded with both red and black currant fruit, dried flowers, damp earth and hints of meatiness, it can be consumed anytime over the coming 10–12 years.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2022 Weighing in at 14.8% alcohol, the 2017 Red Wine Ciel du Cheval blends equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc from this outstanding site on Red Mountain. On the nose, it develops creosote tones alongside red florals, wintergreen, cigar ash and suggestions of Asian spices that all take shape in the glass. The palate is seamless and soft, delivering rich red and dark fruit flavors alongside black licorice and a hint of menthol. Glorious to consume now, the 2017 Ciel du Cheval could easily be a 20-year wine.RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Oct 2020 Dark ruby in color, the 2017 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard is dark-fruited with juicy black plum, blackberry essence and dark cherry with hints of currants and cassis. Soft aromas of red flowers and pencil shavings waft with a dusty tension. Medium to full-bodied, the wine shows precision with an elegant frame and sturdy tannins, ending with a long-lingering, mineral finish with high-tone red fruits of dark, dusty cherry skin and red plum skin. This will drink fantastically for the next decade, but it won’t do you wrong if you open a bottle tomorrow. Bravo!
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2022 Rich and delicious to consume now, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain shows off ripe blackberry, black cherry and scorched earth tones on the palate. Full-bodied, with good finesse and depth, this youthful Cabernet Sauvignon will provide drinking enjoyment over the next decade.RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Oct 2021 The 2018 Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon starts with a firm, dusty and juicy nose with aromas of tasty black cherry, wilted lavender and roses with elements of redcurrants and crème de cassis. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is juicy and features dusty tannins, with flavors of black plum and juicy black Raspberry skin across the mid-palate. The Cabernet concludes with firm, tannic edge and a lingering flavor of crème de violette. This rested for 20 months in French oak, 40% new, and represents a great value for the price. 252,000 bottles were filled.SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2022 Structured yet supple, with vibrant black cherry, toasty mocha and spice flavors that finish with polished tannins. Drink now through 2028. 21,755 cases made.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jun 2013 Tasted from bottle, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Ciel is 100% Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 18 months in 100% new French oak. Full-bodied, powerful and concentrated, it possesses brilliantly rich aromas and flavors of smoked game, black currant, graphite, tobacco and crushed stone-like minerality. More concentrated, backwards and masculine than the 2011, it will require 3–4 years of cellaring and impress for upwards of two decade, minimum. Drink 2017–2030.ST9494 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2013 Dark berries and minerals on the vibrant, sweet nose. Intensely flavored but light on its feet, conveying an impression of serious power without any excess weight. Dark berry fruit flavors are complicated by subtle soil tones and strong graphite minerality. This wonderfully concentrated, seamless wine finishes with noble tannins and outstanding palate-staining persistence. A good bit of this material is declassified into DeLille’s D2 and Four Flags bottlings. Wonderfully suave Washington cabernet for extended cellaring.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jun 2017 Checking in as a blend of 40% Mourvedre, 35% Syrah and the balance Grenache, the 2014 Parvata (this is a Sanskrit word meaning rocks and stones) dishes up awesome notes of blueberries, liquid violets, barbecued meats and peppery spice to go with a full-bodied and rich yet still tight and focused style on the palate. This is a beautiful, incredibly pure GSM blend from winemaker Todd Alexander that will benefit from a year or two in bottle and keep for a decade. It’s one of the best GSM blends coming out of Washington. Give it a decant if drinking anytime soon.
