RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Mar 2020 The 2017 Capbern is medium to deep garnet-purple colored with aromas of baked blackberries, Morello cherries, cassis, fertile loam, unsmoked cigars and sautéed herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, firm and grainy with a good black fruit core and red fruit sparks on the finish. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak, 60% new. The final blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020 The 2017 Capbern was bottled at the end April 2019. The wine has a perfumed bouquet with black fruit and light marine aromas, and a touch of brine in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannin, very classic in style and quintessentially Saint-Estèphe. Moderate in length, there is a slight rawness on the finish.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/11/2021 The 2018 Château Capbern checks in as a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend that includes 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, all of which was brought up in 60% new barrels. It has a deep, dark, earthy, classic Saint-Estèphe bouquet that gives up lots of cassis and almost blue fruits as well as ample chocolate, damp earth, and leafy herb-like aromas and flavors. With a full-bodied, rich, opulent mouthfeel, loads of sumptuous dark fruits, sweet tannins, and a great finish, this brilliant 2018 brings lots of fruit and opulence, yet stays weightless and balanced, with solid underlying structure. A hidden gem in the vintage, this is every bit as good as the 2016, and it’s going to shine for two decades or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Apr 2019 The 2018 Capbern is composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot and comes in at 14.6% alcohol. It’s anticipated to age for 16 months in barriques, 60% new. Deep purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with vibrant scents of black raspberries, kirsch and fresh blackcurrants with nuances of cedar chest, pencil lead and forest floor plus a waft of lavender. Full-bodied, rich and packed with juicy fruit, it has a firm line of grainy tannins and loads of freshness, finishing with an herbal lift.VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 The 2018 Capbern was a wine where I expressed reservations in terms of a soupçon of sur-maturité and the alcohol level when I tasted it from barrel. Now in bottle, well, I still have those reservations. That is not to imply that it is a bad wine — far from it. There is a generous lift on the nose of blackberry, touches of blueberry and light violet aromas, and the palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins and plenty of graphite-infused black fruit. Yet I find the finish a bit wearing and rather monolithic vis-à-vis other vintages tasted. It feels like a bit of a blunt instrument and I much prefer the Marquis de Calon this year.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022 I love the nose on the 2019 Château Capbern, a medium to full-bodied, spicy, rich, tobacco and cedar pencil-filled beauty with ripe yet building tannins, a great mix of richness and freshness, and a blockbuster of a finish. It’s incredibly impressive, and while it offers pleasure even today, it deserves 5-6 years of bottle age, and I can’t imagine it not evolving for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Feb 2013 The 2010 is a more structured, restrained, less flamboyant version of the 2009. A final blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that hit 14.5% natural alcohol, this wine (which represents only 55% of the estate's production) is full-bodied, classic and built along the lines of the 2000 (although that wine was made before Reybier acquired the estate and upgraded quality significantly). This wine exhibits beautifully pure notes of creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, pen ink, graphite and hints of toast and vanillin. The wine is full and rich, and although aged in 80% new oak, the wood is a subtle background component. This beauty will take longer to round into shape than the dramatic and compelling 2009. Forget it for 5–8 years, and drink it over the following three-plus decades.SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2013 An extremely well-sculpted, modern wine, with an enormous core of plum sauce, blackberry coulis and cassis fruit to match the ambitious roasted apple wood-, black tea- and tobacco-infused toast. Dense and chewy now, displaying the tannic spine of the vintage, this remains integrated, racy and incredibly long, offering a piercing chalky backbone that rivets everything together. Best from 2018 through 2038.WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2013 This is a complex and rich wine dominated by superripe fruit. It is a wine of extremes, of fruit, of dark tannins allied to some bitterness from the black chocolate extract. Ripe plums and sweet black fruits are given a lift at the end with bright acidity.ST94+94+? pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jul/Aug 2013 Full, bright ruby. Superripe but vibrant nose offers liqueur-like cassis, graphite, mocha and exotic oak scents; smells thick! Then plush, dense, large-scaled and seamless, offering extraordinary breadth and a 3-D texture to its dark fruit, graphite and mineral flavors. This very modern style of Cos finishes with outstanding, building, palate-saturating persistence and utterly sweet tannins.
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, June 22, 2021 Aromas of blackberry, plum, cocoa, iodine, clove and graphite. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins. Tightly wound and mineral at the moment, with dusty gravel and graphite notes, yet with focus and precision. Such balance and harmony for the vintage. Try from 2025.JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/11/2021 The top wine, the 2018 Château D’Issan is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot that spent 18 months in 50% new French oak. It offers a beautiful, singular bouquet of blackcurrants, new leather, smoked tobacco, scorched earth, and camphor. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, seamless Margaux with wonderful tannins, beautifully integrated acidity, and just a flawlessly balanced, elegant, layered style that’s going to evolve for 20–25 years. It’s one classy 2018 that has loads to love. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Apr 2019 The 2018 D’Issan is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, aging in 50% new and 50% second year barrels for an estimated 18 months. With 13.97% alcohol and a deep garnet-purple color, it features baked berries, warm cherries and cassis with spice box and fragrant earth plus tea hints. Medium to full-bodied, it has a great core of muscular fruit with firm, fine-grained tannins, with nice freshness, finishing layered with mineral notions.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 The 2018 d’Issan is a potent, backward wine that is going to need a number of years to come into its own. Dark and brooding, with serious intensity, the 2018 shows off real depth in its blue/purplish fruit, chocolate, spice, smoke and leather flavors. The tannins are imposing today, but, then again, everything about the 2018 feels large in scale. I can’t wait to see how the 2018 ages.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 The 2018 Deyrem Valentin is very perfumed on the nose, offering blackberry, blueberry, touches of violet petal and light incense aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a silky-smooth texture and a vibrant, minerally finish that lingers. This is a gorgeous, finely tuned and precise Margaux that is going to give 20 years of drinking pleasure.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2019 Deyrem Valentin has a lovely nose with crushed wild strawberry, raspberry and light rose petal scents. The Cabernet is expressive here. The palate is medium-bodied with white pepper-tinged red fruit, good grip and a lovely graphite note towards the finish that feels fleshy and generous. You could almost broach this now, but I’d prefer to afford it another 12 months in bottle. (Neal Martin)JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022 Well worth checking out, the 2019 Château Deyrem Valentin shows the lively, elegant style of the vintage. Giving up complex red and black fruits, lots of floral, sappy, cedary herb-like notes, soft tannins, and a good finish, it’s a pleasure-bent effort to drink over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019 The 2018 Fonbadet has a refined, detailed bouquet of cedar and mint-tinged black fruit that gains intensity in the glass. The oak is judiciously used, both here and on the palate, which is harmonious and silky-smooth in texture, disguising the depth and intensity of this Pauillac. Easily the finest Fonbadet I have tasted, it is a classy wine with big ambitions, and the best wine that I have encountered from this estate. Chapeau!JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - May 1, 2019 I loved the 2018 Château Fonbadet, a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend (there’s 25% Merlot) that’s aging in 50% new French oak. Classic Pauillac notes of cassis, lead pencil, graphite, cold fireplace, and ample earthy minerality all flow to a medium to full-bodied, elegant wine that stays tight, focused, and structured on the palate. It’s going to need 4–5 years of bottle age, but it’s a beauty. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 The 2019 Giscours is every bit as compelling today as it was from barrel. Dark and sumptuous in feel, Giscours shows off its notable dimension and breadth. Succulent black cherry, plum, leather, tobacco, menthol and licorice intensify as this gorgeous, beautifully layered Margaux builds with time in the glass. The 2019 is a big wine, but not quite as exuberant as the 2018. Tasted two times. (Antonio Galloni)RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Apr 2022 The 2019 Giscours has turned out very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries, burning embers, lilac and violets framed by a discreet patina of new oak. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it’s polished and perfumed, with a velvety, seamless profile and bright animating acids, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Alexandre Van Beek and his team are taking this estate to heights it hasn’t hit since the 1970s, and this is another of the great bargains of the 2019 en primeur campaign. (William Kelley)JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022 Checking in as a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, the 2019 Château Giscours is one heck of an impressive Margaux. Deep purple-hued, with a great nose of both black and blue fruits as well as sappy herbs, tobacco, and flowers, it has nicely integrated oak, medium to full body, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. It’s beautifully done. Hide bottles for 4–6 years and enjoy over the following two decades or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/11/2021 A youthful, unevolved 2018 with lots of up-front blue and black fruits as well as cedary herbs, violets, and scorched earth, the 2018 Château Gloria is medium to full-bodied and has a beautifully balanced, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and both richness and freshness. The purity of fruit is spot on. It’s another brilliant wine from this estate that readers will love. It’s going to benefit from 2–4 years in the cellar and cruise for two decades in cold cellars. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 The 2018 Gloria has turned out beautifully. Medium in body, with terrific balance and tons of class, Gloria will especially appeal to readers in search of a wine that is not super-exuberant, as so many 2018s are. Bright floral notes, blood orange and red berry fruit all run through this wonderfully expressive Saint-Julien. Give the tannins at least a few years to soften.RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021 The 2018 Gloria is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, aged for approximately 14 months in oak barriques, 40% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it sashays out of the glass with flamboyant notes of kirsch, black raspberries and cassis, plus hints of potpourri, unsmoked cigars and star anise. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a good amount of juicy black and red fruit flavors, backed up by slightly chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing spicy.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Apr 2015 This is another estate in Pauillac that has dramatically raised its performance level over the last decade. The 2012, from grapes harvested between October 2 and 17, has supple tannins and a nice mouthfeel that builds incrementally, offering up plenty of crème de cassis, plum and blackberry fruit. The wine is soft, round, opulently textured, and an undeniable success for 2012. The purity of fruit is also admirable. Drink this medium to full-bodied Pauillac over the next 20 years. This is significantly better than the barrel samples tasted in March, 2013.VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2016 The 2012 Grand Puy Ducasse is bold, racy and supple, all qualities that are best appreciated sooner rather than later. There is plenty to admire in the wine’s giving, open-knit personality. Succulent red cherries, plums, mint and sweet spices round out the inviting finish. The 2012 is a bit two-dimensional, but it is nevertheless a solid effort for the year, not to mention quite appealing.
VN92+92–95 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2019 The 2018 Grand Puy Ducasse is gorgeous. In fact, the 2018 is one of the most polished and refined recent vintages I can remember tasting for a wine that up until recently was much darker and more extracted in style. The purity of the fruit is simply striking, while the explosive energy in the glass is a thing of beauty. It will be fascinating to see where the 2018 goes, but there is little question that this style towards more elegance driven by Technical Director Anne Le Naour and consulting oenologist Hubert de Bouärd is hugely appealing. The 2018 is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Merlot. Tasted two times.SP92+92–95 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2019 Lovely, featuring a beautiful beam of pure cassis, lined with iron, savory and tobacco notes. The long finish really glistens. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. 10,000 cases made.RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Apr 2019 The 2018 Grand-Puy-Ducasse is deep garnet-purple in color and has quite a lot of cedar/oak on the nose to begin, opening out to a core of warm black and red currants, stewed plums and mulberries with touches of pencil shavings, fried herbs, lavender and tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, the palate gives a firm, grainy frame with some chew from the oak and fresh, crunchy red and black fruit, finishing savory.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 The 2018 La Gurgue is one of the little jewels of Margaux. Pliant, supple and inviting, the 2018 has so much to offer. All the elements are wonderfully fused together. Ripe red cherry, blood orange, mint and sweet floral notes all build as this racy Margaux shows off its sensuality and charm. Mildew was especially severe, and yields were just 12 hectoliters per hectare, but the wine is superb. The blend is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 The 2019 La Tour de Mons spans two terms of ownership. It was sold in February 2020 to the Perroudot family (owners of Labégorce and Marquis d’Alesme), so the current team finished the aging. The 2019 has an expressive bouquet of lively blackberry and raspberry fruit, some attractive orange pith scents coming through with time. The palate is well balanced with fleshy ripe red fruit, white pepper and graphite. Nicely balanced and gentle, leading to a precise, quite Pauillac-like finish. Lovely.JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022 The 2019 Château La Tour De Mons is solid, with medium-bodied aromas and flavors of savory red fruits, leather, dried herbs, and chalky minerality. Balanced, with building tannins and outstanding length, it’s going to drink well for 15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
