VN8989 pts. - Vinous - May 2023 The 2022 Rosato Etna is understated and delicate, with dried strawberry and dusty florals forming its bouquet. This shows a pretty inner sweetness up front that gives way to crisp orchard fruits and spice. It finishes a bit dry, yet clean, with a saline-tinge that slowly tapers off. (Eric Guido)
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2020 Graphite, thyme, brambly berry and violet aromas waft out of the glass along with Mediterranean scrub. Boasting youthful tension, the chiseled palate delivers succulent Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and coffee bean set against elegant, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it balanced while a hint of saline lingers on the close. Drink through 2033.VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2021 The 2018 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo is dark and rich in the glass, wafting up with notes of cherry sauce, plums and Indian spice. It is deeply textural and velvety in feel, with ripe black instead of red notes, lifted by cooling mineral and minty herbs. There’s an almost balsamic twang to the finish, as this leaves the palate drenched in primary fruit and grippy tannins. The Feudo di Mezzo is a bit of a bruiser in 2018, yet a few years of cellaring should help bring it into focus.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - May 2023 The 2022 Rosé Nerello Mascalese di Adele opens with a pleasantly sweet bouquet that blends green melon with gingery spice and candied citrus. It washes across the palate with its silken textures, neatly contrasted by mineral-tinged fruits and brisk acidity. The 2022 tapers off crunchy and wildly fresh, leaving behind a hint of lemon oil. (Eric Guido)
VN92+92+? pts. - Vinous - Dec 2015 Bright red. Reticent nose hints at red berries, minerals and flowers. Smooth and dense but juicy too, with flavors of red berries, cherry and minerals lifted by peppery acidity and a bright floral note. Finishes clean and long. There’s a lovely seamless quality to this still-youthful but extremely promising red.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022 Roses and cherries galore waft up from the 2019 Passorosso with ease. This is silky-smooth and cool-toned in feel, mixing juicy acidity with a pleasant inner sweetness that creates a seductively vibrant yet fruit-forward expression. The 2019 cleans up beautifully, leaving a coating of round tannins that create a classically dry feel, as hints of spiced citrus and hard red candies slowly fade. The pleasure factor is turned up high here, and the balance is on point.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2020 Fragrant blue flower, underbrush, wild berry and Mediterranean brush aromas form the nose on this vibrant red, grown on high altitude slopes. The tense, racy palate offers sour cherry, orange zest and star anise alongside taut, fine-grained tannins and an acidic backbone. Drink 2022–2030.VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2021 Like entering a shop selling exotic teas, spices, incense and dried flowers, 2018 Etna Rosso Guardiola holds your attention firmly. There’s a wonderful purity to its tart red fruits, yet also a lifted and feminine feel, as inner rose notes amass over a layer of youthful grippy tannins. Hints of licorice and cherry linger through the long and structured finale. The 2018 Guardiola should take on more weight with cellaring, yet I honestly wonder if its fruit can stand the test of time.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2021 The 2019 Etna Rosso Moganazzi is spicy and intense, blasting up from the glass with crushed ashen stone, red currants, wild strawberries, sage and hints of cedar. It’s rich and pliant upon entry, yet quickly firms up through a mix of mineral-tinged berries, brisk acids and grippy tannins that arrive quite early and hold firm. That said, there is plenty of primary fruit and depth to balance, as it tapers off structured and long, leaving hints of licorice and inner rose to linger. This is only the third vintage of Moganazzi, which comes from steeply terraced 80-year-old vines at 650 meters on the north side of Etna. (Eric Guido)
Grande Terroir Ellittico 2018 / 750 ml. | Item#54077
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2020 Fragrant and loaded with finesse, this opens with enticing aromas of Mediterranean brush, violet, crushed lemon thyme and star anise. On the savory, focused palate, notes of licorice, hazelnut and flinty mineral accent a juicy red berry core. Polished tannins and fresh acidity provide seamless support and balance. Drink 2021–2028.JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, November 17, 2020 Very complex aromas of dried berries and strawberries with orange peel, perfume and cherry. It’s full-to medium-bodied with a tight, linear palate and fine tannins, as well as zesty acidity. Give it time to open. Better after 2022.WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - October 1, 2020 Contrada San Lorenzo’s soils, like those of Calderara Sottana, derive from Etna’s Ellittico eruption center, but San Lorenzo’s are deeper and less rocky. Those deep soils presented problems in the rain-soaked 2018 growing season, but strict selection at harvest yielded a dark-fruited wine, its plum and black-cherry flavors tinged with notes of orange zest and girded by warm, tarry undertones.VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2021 As the 2018 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo blows off a bit of youthful reduction, an inviting bouquet forms, mixing violets and roses with hints of white pepper and dusty strawberry. This is seamlessly soft and polished with medium weight, ushering in floral-tinged red and hints of blue fruit which give way to sweet herbal notes. Residual acids keep the expression remarkably fresh even as youthful tannins saturate deeply, leaving bitter notes of cranberry and cherry pits to linger. The 2018 San Lorenzo has the feel of a sleeping giant, requiring a few years of cellaring to truly awaken.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2021 A lovely nose of spice and mineral transitions to flavors of crushed raspberry, dried mint and a hint of orange zest on the palate of this well-knit medium-bodied red trimmed by sleek tannins. It’s long and mouthwatering on the finish. Drink now through 2028. 10,000 cases made, 3,500 cases imported.
