The history of US winemaking dates back to the 1600s, when colonists planted vineyards in Virginia and, soon after, Pennsylvania. Early attempts met with considerable hardship, however, as settlers didn't care for the taste of some of the native American grapes and European vines shipped in were often destroyed by pests and vine disease. It wasn't until the 1800s that commercially successful wineries started to take hold in the U.S., only to have their growth stunted by more vine epidemics in the late 1800s, and later by Prohibition.
Following the repeal of Prohibition, US winemaking gradually recovered. In the 1970s and 80s, California wineries started to make waves in the international market. Today the United States is one of the world's foremost wine producers, ranking behind only France, Italy and Spain in total wine production.
The vast majority of US wine production comes from the West Coast, and the vast majority of that is from California wineries, which produce almost nine out of every 10 bottles made in the U.S. Washington and Oregon wineries are also significant producers, and New York wineries are beginning to establish a reputation for fine wines, with Finger Lakes wines and Niagara Escarpment wines earning critical acclaim.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2019 Glimmering red. Spice-accented red fruit and rose oil on the nose, along with notes of white pepper, allspice and musky earth. Juicy and focused in the mouth, offering bitter cherry and red berry flavors with a touch of medicinal bitterness. Turns sweeter with air and shows very good energy on the persistent finish, which is firmed by dusty, fine-grained tannins that fold smoothly into the wine’s fruit.Premier SelectPremier Select wines are handpicked by our staff from amongst thousands of wines for their exceptional quality. RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018 Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Proprietary Red Blend Family Reserve Generations is intensely scented of warm black and red currants, Black Forest cake and blueberry compote with nuances of chocolate mint, new leather, tilled soil and fallen leaves. Full-bodied with a taut frame of grainy tannins supporting the densely packed black fruit layers, it has a long lingering minty kick on the finish.SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2020 Features a solid range blackberry paste, fig and plum notes, with cassis bush, bittersweet cocoa and licorice root accents. The solidly grippy finish leaves a hefty impression, but this will have fans. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - April 11, 2019 Flirting with perfection, the 2016 Sorella checks in as 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% each of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot. Coming all from the Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills, its saturated purple color is followed by a La Mission Haut Brion-like bouquet of black and blue fruits, gravelly, minerality, smoke tobacco, and chocolate. Deep, multi-dimensional, full-bodied, and with beautiful complexity, it’s a magical wine as well as the finest wine from this estate to date. Bravo! (Jeb Dunnuck)RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2019 The 2016 Sorella is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. The plump, juicy nose exudes aromas of luxurious, elegant fruit characteristics of ripe blackberry and dark plum along with a layered core of oak and a structured floral bouquet. Exciting and thought-provoking on the full-bodied palate, fruit and oak spices radiate with the precision and focus of world-class wine, building to a plushier, fruit-forward expression on the mid-palate yet showing a mineral focus. The finish is long and winding, with layers that continue to evolve in the mouth, unfolding to a generous and intricate lingering expression. Only 472 cases were made, and it will be your lucky day if you can add some of this stellar wine to your cellar. Bravo!VN91+91+ pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019 Bright ruby-red. Brooding scents of blackberry, blueberry, licorice, menthol and graphite. Dense but sharply delineated and penetrating, with black and blue fruit flavors conveying terrific energy and juiciness that mask the wine’s thickness. Still, this can’t quite match the more Merlot-based Champoux Vineyard blend for density. This wine boasts serious Cabernet Sauvignon structure, finishing with lovely mounting violet lift and length. Firmly tannic but not hard. This, too, should evolve slowly but even today it’s balanced and enjoyable. I suppose it’s a bit more tannic and less pliant than the Andrew Will ’16s that contain more Merlot, but none of these wines lack for definition or spine.

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019 Medium ruby-red. Aromas of blackcurrant, dark raspberry, espresso, bitter chocolate and graphite. Silky and plush but also vinous on entry, then densely packed, seamless and deep in the middle, with savory red and blacker fruit flavors complicated by subtle brown spices and minerals. Conveys excellent inner-mouth peppery lift and vinosity without coming across as green. This wine struck me as quite similar to its 2015 predecessor, suggesting that owner/winemaker Greg Harrington was especially successful in avoiding obvious signs of the very hot 2015 growing season. This savory, classically dry, energetic Cabernet Sauvignon finishes with firm, suave tannins and slowly mounting persistence.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2018 Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso features baked berries, cherry cordial, spice cake and potpourri on the nose with touches of mandarin peel and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, refreshingly tart and with a chewy backbone, it is wonderfully opulent and spicy on the palate with a long, earthy finish.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2018 The 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is utterly sublime. Lifted, aromatically precise and nuanced, the 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is fabulous. Rose petal, blood orange, cranberry and raspberry notes give the Monte Rosso striking aromatic presence and brightness. Unfortunately, Bedrock, like all the other wineries that purchased grapes at Monte Rosso, no longer have access to the fruit off this historic ranch. Morgan Peterson and Chris Cottrell certainly chose a strong vintage as their last. The 2016 is sublime.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2018 Comes at you like a surly teenager but wins you over with power and personality. Cracked pepper and licorice aromas lead to brooding blackberry, orange zest and bay leaf flavors that finish with big but polished tannins. Best from 2019 through 2026. 300 cases made.
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - June 5, 2018 The 2016 Zinfandel Angeli (96% Zinfandel, 2% Syrah, and 2% Petite Sirah) comes from Alexander Valley in the northern part of California. Its plum/purple color is followed by a rockingly good bouquet of spiced plums, cedar, sandalwood, and exotic spice. Medium to full-bodied, focused, elegant and seamless, with a silky texture, it’s very much in the style of the 2016 vintage. While already hard to resist, it should keep for 6–7 years. It’s a great value. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018 Marietta’s 2016 Zinfandel Angeli is plush, deep, dense and beautifully textured. Expressive floral and spice notes add lift and nuance to this fresh, impeccably balanced Zinfandel. The purity of the fruit here is striking.
RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2019 The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Samantha’s is made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 21 months in 86% new French oak. This is a vineyard selection blend usually harvested slightly later. Very deep purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with vibrant cassis, blackberry pie and preserved plums scents with nuances of mocha, pencil shavings, menthol, lilacs and cloves plus a touch of chargrilled meat. The medium to full-bodied palate is super intense with layer upon layer of black fruits, savory and floral notions and a rock-solid foundation of grainy tannins, finishing very long and very minerally. 698 cases produced.VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2018 The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Samantha’s is magnificent. Powerful and sumptuous, with stunning inner perfume and sweetness, the 2016 is simply thrilling to taste. Bittersweet chocolate, plum, black cherry, lavender, spice and new leather take on added shades of richness and texture in this towering, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon. Swaths of tannin build as this striking wine gains volume and intensity with air. In a word: superb!
RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018 The 2016 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain is a blend of 55% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Very deep purple-black in color, it features earth, redcurrants, red and black cherries, plums and loads of florals with a waft of dried herbs. The palate offers loads of lift from the menthol and red fruits, with a fine-grained texture and tons of energy on the finish. 605 cases produced.VN93+93–96 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018 The 2016 Proprietary Red Wine Sugarloaf Mountain is fresh, nuanced and full of potential. The aromatics and fruit are beautifully delineated, while bright acidity gives the wine vibrancy and focus. The 2016 is shaping up to be a real jewel of a wine.
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Sep 2019 Vecina vineyard is located in the western foothills of Oakville, just to the south-east of the winery (up on Oakville Grade). Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Vecina slips sensuously out of the glass with gorgeous black cherries, kirsch, wild blueberries and blackcurrant pastilles notes plus suggestions of bouquet garni, pencil lead, tilled earth and underbrush. Full-bodied, taut and packed with ripe, expressive, exquisitely accented black and blue fruits, it has loads of earthy sparks and a compelling fine-grained nature to the firm texture, finishing long and layered. This bright, energetic, incredibly nuanced beauty is built like a brick house and, while approachable in youth, is easily a 50-year wine. I therefore urge readers to wait at least 5–7 years before opening to allow for the myriad of subtle nuances to emerge and offer that “WOW” experience that will reward patience.JS9999 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, May 3, 2019 Blackberry, black-truffle, sliced-mushroom and dried-beef aromas. Full-bodied, broad shouldered and amazingly structured and layered. Dense, extremely long and intense. It’s seamless and goes on for minutes. Great wine. Give it time to give you even more. Better after 2022.VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 The 2016 Vecina is the most tannic and brooding of the wines, as it so often is. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of black cherry, chocolate, new leather, licorice, spice and menthol. I would cellar the 2016 for at least few years to shed some of its youthful bombastic intensity. There is certainly no shortage of character or complexity. As always, Vecina emerges from choice parcels within Vine Hill Ranch.SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 15, 2020 Intense from the get-go, featuring dark currant and steeped plum fruit, wrapped in licorice root, warm gravel and espresso cream notes. The long, muscular finish smolders, with juniper and tobacco elements keeping pace with the fruit. Seriously built. Best from 2022 through 2038. 650 cases made.
JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - June 5, 2018 Checking in as a blend of 55% Syrah and 45% Mourvèdre, the 2016 The Integral has a touch of Cornas-like meatiness to go with sensational notes of blackberries, peppery herbs, bacon fat, and game. It’s rich, full-bodied, thrillingly textured and beautifully balanced. In short, don’t miss it! (Jeb Dunnuck)RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2018 Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 The Integral, a blend of 55% Syrah and 45% Mourvèdre, opens with a stunning perfume of violets and roses over a core of crushed black plums and black cherries with a waft of black pepper. The palate is very big, concentrated and full-bodied with firm, rounded tannins and a refreshing lift, finishing very long and very perfumed. 519 cases produced.VN91+91–94 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018 The 2016 Integral is 55% Syrah and 45% Mourvèdre. Vinification with 100% whole clusters of the Mourvèdre adds striking aromatic top notes. Rose petal, sage, mint and raspberry notes show terrific raciness in this flavorful, mid-weight red. The Integral is another arresting wine from Mike Officer.
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, July 2, 2019 Ripe, boysenberry and cherry aromas are nicely augmented with earthy, woody, savory notes.
