ST93+93+? pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2014 Bright red-ruby. Sexy aromas of blackberry, violet and licorice, along with a musky soil-driven nuance. Rich, thick and sweet; wonderfully plush and seamless for a Bordeaux blend from this cool year, with a texture of liquid silk. Already very showy, this superb wine’s serious building tannins promise a slow evolution in bottle. A great expression of this outstanding vineyard, and seemingly even richer in the early going than the superb 2010 was a year ago.RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Jun 2014 One of the top wines in the vintage, the 2011 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard (52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot that spent 21 months in 35% new French oak) offers thrilling amounts of fruit and texture, with full-bodied richness, excellent mid-palate depth and sweet tannin. Loaded with both red and black currant fruit, dried flowers, damp earth and hints of meatiness, it can be consumed anytime over the coming 10–12 years.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Dec 2011 The 2009 Red Wine EE Cuvee Showket Vineyard flows onto the palate with sweet roses, spices, flowers, all of which come together in a forward, juicy style meant to be enjoyed over the next few years. Floral notes round out the textured finish. This is another soft, totally inviting wine from Russell Bevan. The EE Cuvee is 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2017.
RP96+96–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Oct 2016 The 2015 Sugarloaf Mountain Proprietary Red that began as an equal-part blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot seems to be an equal follow-up to the perfect 2014. Incredible aromatics of spring flowers and blue and black fruits are followed by a long, deep, skyscraper-like wine with explosive fruit intensity, loads of glycerin and a wonderfully, fleshy, succulent mouthfeel, which is certainly a characteristic of the top 2015s. This should drink nicely for 15–20 years.VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2018 The 2015 Proprietary Red Wine Sugarloaf Mountain is laced with the essence of ripe red cherry, plum, sage, wild flowers and savory herbs are all beautifully delineated. Voluptuous and racy to the core, the 2015 is a classic Russell Bevan wine built on layers of flavor and textural intensity.SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2018 Rich and generous, offering an array of dark-hued fruits. The ample structure bears merit, with fine-grained, dusty tannins. Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2021 through 2032. 500 cases made.
RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018 The 2016 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain is a blend of 55% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Very deep purple-black in color, it features earth, redcurrants, red and black cherries, plums and loads of florals with a waft of dried herbs. The palate offers loads of lift from the menthol and red fruits, with a fine-grained texture and tons of energy on the finish. 605 cases produced.VN93+93–96 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018 The 2016 Proprietary Red Wine Sugarloaf Mountain is fresh, nuanced and full of potential. The aromatics and fruit are beautifully delineated, while bright acidity gives the wine vibrancy and focus. The 2016 is shaping up to be a real jewel of a wine.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015 The red wine from Knights Valley, the 2013 Proprietary Red Mekerra, is a blend of 53% Cabernet Franc and 47% Merlot, and is my top wine along with the CJ. This is an estate wine from the Melkas’ 10-acre vineyard planted in Knights Valley. Beautiful, chocolaty floral notes with blackcurrants, graphite and earth are all present in this medium to full-bodied, stunningly pure and multilayered wine — 425 cases aged in 60% new French oak for 20 months and bottled unfiltered. This beauty should drink well for at least 20 years.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2015 The 2013 Mekerra, a Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend, is powerful, dense and concentrated, with a real sense of power and overtness. Black cherry, plum, mocha and graphite are some of the notes that flesh out as the wine shows off its ample, plush personality. This inviting red should offer tremendous pleasure over the next decade or so.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jul 2023 Composed of 29% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 12% Malbec and 12% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Faithful Hound offers a ripe, succulent and healthy frame of red fruits that burst out of the glass. Medium-bodied, the palate provides complexity and elegance with a balanced structure, offering subtle notes of pencil shavings, oak spice and herbs that lift the mid-palate. The wine continues to uncoil in the mouth as it glides to a graceful and lingering finish. It will continue drinking well for years to come. The wine rested 18 months in French oak barriques, 30% new. 108,000 bottles were produced. Give it a try. (Anthony Mueller)
JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2019 In the same ballpark as the 2015, the 2016 Hexameter (55% Cabernet Franc, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a splash of Merlot) is similarly inky colored and has heavenly notes of black raspberries, cassis, violets, and forest floor. This full-bodied, absolutely riveting 2016 has ultra-fine tannins, is perfectly balanced, no hard edges, and a purity of fruit that’s hard to describe. It’s another legendary wine from this team. Give bottles another 2–3 years and it will knock your socks off over the following 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Dec 2018 Blended of 55% Cabernet Franc, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Hexameter leaps from the glass with bold Black Forest cake, cassis and redcurrant jelly scents with suggestions of candied violets, pencil lead, oolong tea and cumin seed with a touch of cigar box. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals loads of red and black fruit layers beautifully laced with exotic spices and floral fragrances, framed by super ripe, super fine-grained tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing long.VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2018 The 2016 Hexameter, Ovid’s Cabernet Franc-based wine, is superb. Bright, focused and beautifully sculpted, the 2016 has a lot going on. Bright red cherry, raspberry, mocha, mint and wild flowers and espresso soar out of the glass. Medium in body and gracious, the 2016 screams with varietal Franc and Pritchard Hill character.SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2020 This features a strong tobacco leaf note amid a hefty core of steeped currant, blackberry and plum fruit flavors. Shows solid depth, with a long tug of warm loam and espresso cream through the finish, while the fruit keeps pace. A big wine, exhibiting serious buried minerality. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2022 through 2038. 570 cases made.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Oct 2020 Dark ruby with purple highlights, the 2017 Pollard Vineyard Red Wine offers seductive aromas of blackberry essence, dark cherry, juicy plum, turned earth and worn leather with subtle baking spices. A blend of 44% Cabernet Franc, 37% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine is medium-bodied and shows impeccable balance with a clearly defined framework of fruit. The expression is velvety on the palate, with a delicate but persistent finish. It’s a beautiful wine!VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019 Bright, moderately saturated ruby-red. A faint note of musky reduction to the aromas of dark raspberry, flowers, mint and milk chocolate. Suave and smooth on entry, then easygoing and fine-grained in the mid-palate, with enticing floral lift to the moderately dense black and blue fruit and licorice flavors. I find this wine a bit more harmonious and filled in than the ’16 version, but then these vines are still very young (this ’17 was from just the fourth leaf). Suaver and longer than the 2016 release, with the tannins better supported by fruit. Not a sweet style, but this blend will give early pleasure. The Pollard wines are gently priced for serious Washington reds.
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021 This is a stunning wine and one of the best in this report covering the icons of Tuscany. The 2019 Tenuta di Trinoro is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Fruit is sourced from the very best parcels, and the blending formula changes according to vintage and the style desired by vintner Andrea Franchetti. These vineyard parcels vary in altitude, ranging from 400 to 600 meters above sea level, and the soils are quite varied with pockets of clay, sand and rock. The Trinoro is profoundly deep and pure with a solid core of black fruit that is framed by an elegant contour of spice, tobacco, smoke and crushed stone. To the palate, the wine is long and the finish can be counted in minutes, but the entire experience is beautifully streamlined and velvety. This vintage saw an important freeze event on the 7th of May, and 9,000 fire candles were lit in the lower vineyard blocks to fight off frost damage.VN97+97+ pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022 The 2019 Tenuta di Trinoro is a surprisingly reticent wine. That’s not a descriptor I find myself reaching for often here, but it seems appropriate. Medium in body and quite nervy, the 2019 is going to need time to come together. The tannins are a bit severe at this stage. And yet there is plenty of Trinoro intensity waiting to emerge. Time brings out hints of dark-fleshed fruit, spice, mocha, licorice and incense. There’s plenty to look forward to.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021 If you love Cabernet Franc, please direct your attention here. The Tenuta di Trinoro 2019 Campo di Magnacosta is a study in the intensity, power and depth of this grape. Campo di Magnacosta was the first of several single-vineyard parcels planted to this variety. The first bottling from this 1.5-hectare site was made in 2011, and this year a mere 2,122 bottles were released. The wine is profound and pure with luscious dark fruit, sharp minerality, spice and etched contours. You get that distinctive hint of slate or pencil shaving that is especially characteristic of this Cabernet Franc. Its full-bodied texture wraps smoothly over the palate, and the tannins have been expertly integrated.VN94+94+ pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022 The 2019 Campo di Magnacosta comes as very tightly wound. Bright red/purplish toned fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper lend notable and salivating energy to this decidedly focused Franc. It’s amazing to see just how expressive these wines are with regards to site and vintage. Let’s see if this fleshes out a bit more with time.SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2021 Bay leaf, tomato leaf and thyme aromas add a savory element to the black currant and black cherry fruit, with lively acidity and compact tannins providing support as this winds down on the lingering finish. Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2042. 176 cases made, 55 cases imported.
JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - June 14, 2019 The 2009 Le Desir is mostly Cabernet Franc and is another wine drinking beautifully today. Classic cassis and dark fruits as well as notes of bay leaf, sandalwood, and spice all flow to a full-bodied, elegant, concentrated red that has fine tannins, perfect balance, and one great finish. Drink it over the coming 20–25 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)ST96+96+? pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2013 Deep ruby-red. Vibrant nose offers cassis, blackberry, licorice, minerals, tobacco leaf and violet. Rich, tactile and deep, offering outstanding energy for the vintage. Boasts a rare combination of explosive fruit intensity and elegance. Builds and echoes dramatically on the vibrant, nuanced finish, which saturates the palate with dark fruits and minerals. This shut down in the glass but my recorked bottle showed uncanny freshness after three days in the refrigerator.RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2013 Another big red is the 2009 Le Desir, a blend of 74% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Malbec. The densest, most tannic, and most forbiddingly backward of the 2009s, it exhibits an inky/purple color along with copious aromas of graphite, spring flowers, blackberries and blueberries as well as a crushed liqueur of chalk-like character, and a huge, multilayered and multi-dimensional finish that lasts nearly 50 seconds. It requires 4–5 more years in the cellar, and should keep for three decades. If you have not yet experienced the wines of Verite, they are true connoisseurs’ efforts that should be purchased by those with cold cellars and long lifelines.
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015 The 2012 Le Desir (64% Cabernet Franc, 24% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Malbec) reminds me of a young vintage of Ausone, such as 2005. The wine has amazing minerality and an explosive blueberry nose intermixed with blackberries, new saddle leather, charcoal and camphor. It is full-bodied, with espresso notes emerging on the palate. There are 1,900 cases of this super-endowed, prodigious wine that should drink well for 35–40 years. How fun it would be for mega-millionaires to put this in a blind tasting of a great vintage of Ausone in 10, 20 or 30 years from now.ST95+95–98 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2014 Bright, deep ruby. Seriously dark aromas of cassis, violet, bitter chocolate and espresso. Hugely rich and ripe but with uncanny energy and definition to the flavors of black raspberry and musky bitter chocolate. This has the density of a top vintage of Chateau Ausone. Finishes with a boatload of ripe tannins that are buffered by the wine’s palate-staining fruit. Another monument in the making.VN94+94–96 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2015 The Cabernet Franc-based 2012 Le Désir is the most aromatic and nuanced of these three 2012s. Savory herbs, mocha and spices meld into a core of punchy pomegranate and red stone fruit in a wine that is both silky and powerful. Here, too, readers can look forward to a long drinking window that will last two decades or so. In 2012, Le Désir is all about finesse.
RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015 The 2013 Le Desir represents 2,500 cases. This is the softest of the three wines in 2013, and this blend of 61% Cabernet Franc, 23% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec emerges with more than half of the cuvée coming from Hillsides in Alexander Valley, 37% from Chalk Hill and the rest tiny dollops from Bennett Valley and Knights Valley. Opaque purple, like its siblings, the wine is showing incredible floral, blueberry and espresso notes, exotic Asian spices, velvety texture, a supple, multilayered mouthfeel and incredible finish, with incense and licorice. This is magnificent young wine, with a good 40–50 years of upside potential. Pierre Seillan is justifiably proud of what he has achieved, and his first vintage of Vérité was only 1998, but they go from strength to strength.VN92+92–95 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2016 The 2013 Le Désir is once again alluring. Le Désir is quite powerful and intense, but it also has fairly soft contours for the year. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, chocolate, mocha, licorice and cloves are all pushed forward. Energetic and explosive, the 2013 is going to need at least a few years in bottle to settle down, but it has plenty to offer. I tasted the 2013 from tank just prior to bottling.
