(There will be no 2016 Graham’s LBV.) Elegant in the mid-palate (unlike its sibling, the Dow’s), this also has good structure, but it is a much better balanced wine. The big fruit of this fine vintage shines through, rendering this rather delicious. This has persistence and focus, plus all that tasty fruit. You can’t go wrong. (Mark Squires)
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2021 One of the original Late Bottled Vintage brands, this continues to set a fine style. This latest release is full of black fruits that have been softened by extra wood aging. At the same time, the richness of the wine shows strongly and emphatically, giving a Port that has density and ready drinkability.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2015 The NV 10 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2014 with 105.23 grams per liter of residual sugar. Easily the 10 with the most weight in the Fladgate group’s lineup this issue, it is a rather powerful 10 year old Tawny with plenty of pop, the biggest and baddest of the trio (Fonseca, Croft and this). There is very fine concentration of flavor for a 10 year old Tawny. If I had a quibble, the alcohol shows at times, especially early on and rather notably when drunk a little too warm. (Around 60 degrees Fahrenheit is a lot better than room temperature most of the time, to be sure, not just here.) Overall, the weight, complexity, mouth feel and grip on the finish still make this my favorite of the group of 10s submitted by Taylor Fladgate this issue, although it’s close and there are some pros and cons. This comes with a bar top cork, i.e., not intended to be aged (although it most certainly can hold a couple of decades barring cork failures).SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2018 Juicy and focused, offering dried cherry, fig and bergamot notes inlaid with red licorice and fruitcake flavors that marry the flattering and racy sides. RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2002 Dense ruby/purple colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this large-scale, but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible (by Fonseca’s standards). Anticipated maturity: 2006–2025.SP92+92–94 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 15, 2002 [Barrel tasting] Tightly wound and unyielding. Lots of plum and raisiny character. Full-bodied, medium-sweet and very, very velvety, with lots of fruit and round tannins. Good grip. Very harmonious for Fonseca.WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2003 Voluptuous, warm and black, this wine follows a simple line even as it grows increasingly dynamic with air. The fruit is smooth and grapey, starting from a dark, stony scent of broken schist and then pouring out full and lithe. Smoky tannins, melding with the alcohol into a licorice ripeness, seem to brighten the finish, adding to the lift of the fruit. The natural simplicity of the balance should allow this to develop for decades.

RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Oct 2021 The 2020 Touriga Vai Nua Signature Series is unoaked and comes in at just 12.2% alcohol. As noted, this is another of the winery’s unoaked series this issue. They are increasingly interesting as a group. This is not quite as tight as the Tinta Carvalha, to name one, although it comes close. It’s fair to note that this is a year younger, however. Then, it is much along the same lines. The Tinta Carvalha has more finesse and acidity. This has that extra bit of concentration, at least in terms of mouthfeel. Neither, however, is very fleshy, very ripe or seems dominated by fruit as opposed to structure. They both have wonderful freshness, understatement and fine purity of fruit. This, like the Tinta Carvalha, is a rather different vision of Alentejo, and that is certainly not an accident. This does seem to lack a little in expressiveness, though, and there the Tinta Carvalha wins. For bargain hunters, it is worth noting that this is some $40 cheaper, even if not quite as interesting.
