JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/28/2018 The old vine cuvée is the 2017 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes, based on 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that’s brought up in older barrels. Blackberries, toasted spice, smoked earth and licorice notes all flow to a rich, powerful, concentrated Rasteau that has ripe, present tannins and a great finish. It’s certainly going to be an outstanding wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)WE8787 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2020 Densely concentrated plum and black cherry flavors are muted by savory notes of crushed earth and tobacco and in this full-bodied blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. It’s a rounded, open-knit wine that’s showing glimpses of maturity, so it’s best to enjoy now–2024. (Anna Lee C. RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Oct 2020 Dark ruby with soft purple highlights, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon has an impactful and precise nose of juicy plum, dark cherry and blackberry essence that waft with elegant French oak tones of vanilla, cinnamon and cardamom. Medium to full-bodied, the wine has a succulent mouthfeel with oak flavors that bind effortlessly to juicy, plump and dark blackberry essence with subtle flavors of dried herbs and bitter dark chocolate. With a long, drawn-out finish, the wine displays all of its complexities as it lingers on the palate with persistence and a tannic grip. This wine is about layers and texture. Give it a try! (Anthony Mueller)WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2020 Fresh herb and flower aromas are out front, followed by notes of spice and plum. The palate is layered and restrained, with plenty of acidity and tannic structure supporting it all. It’s far from a big bruiser, but this is serious Cabernet, with impeccable balance. (Sean P. Sullivan)VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020 Full, dark red. Cool aromas of redcurrant, tobacco leaf, licorice, black pepper and menthol. Very suave and smooth on entry, then pure but reticent in the middle palate, conveying subtle salinity to the flavors of dark berries, soil, graphite and licorice. No easy sweetness here! This classically dry, Old World-style Cabernet is still a bit cool and laid-back but should evolve gracefully. Finishes with firm but fine-grained tannins and subtle savory grip. But not quite the depth for an even higher rating. (Stephen Tanzer)WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/20 For this wine, Greg Harrington and Brandon Moss blend fruit from sources such as Phinny Hill and Dionysus with grapes from their estate vineyards. All about structure at the moment, this is very firm with a tannic spine. It needs time to get beyond its initial notes of violets and sealing wax and reveal the dark fruit within. JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, July 14, 2021 Here is a red with a solid palate of red berries, crushed stone and fresh flowers. Full-bodied with beautifully crafted tannins that are soft and relaxed. The fruit character is complex with some fresh mushrooms and rose petals to the dark fruit. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but will be much better in two or three years. Drink after 2022. (James Suckling)RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2021 The Tenuta degli Dei 2017 Cavalli sees a base of Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and is a terrific dinner wine. It is polished and deep with some of the fruit nuances you can expect of this vintage. However, the overall effect is balanced and smooth with plenty of fruity power, weight and length. Production is about 16,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)Premier SelectPremier Select wines are handpicked by our staff from amongst thousands of wines for their exceptional quality. JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - November 1, 2018 A little gem of a wine is the 2017 Côtes Catalanes Roubials from Saint Roch, which is mostly Grenache mixed with 10% Mourvèdre, brought up in 20% new barrels. It has loads of fresh blackberry and blueberry fruits intermixed with plenty of violets, leafy herbs, and charcoal aromas and flavors. Drink this medium-bodied, pure, seamless beauty over the coming 5–7 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2019 Mainly Grenache, the 2017 Roubials is another fine example of the good work being done at this property. Black cherries dominate the nose, while the palate is slightly earthier. Full-bodied, dense and tannic, it could use another year in the bottle to loosen up, but the tannins are soft, so there’s no real need to defer gratification.
JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/27/2021 The 2017 Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate has a slightly darker profile of licorice, black cherry, and wood spice. The palate is generous and structured, with plum pit, mineral-rich earth, and dried orange blossom. These are wines with incredible aromatic complexity and depth. Drink 2025–2050. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is a dark, mysterious wine. Black cherry, menthol, tobacco, licorice, spice, new leather and pine meld together in a super-classic expression of Ginestra. Deep, rich and enveloping, the 2017 is so impressive in the early going. Here, too, the finesse of the tannins is remarkable.RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 Soils in the Ginestra vineyard show more moisture-retaining clay in their composition, making them better positioned to handle hot and dry vintages such as this. The Elio Grasso 2017 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté reveals soft concentration and extra richness; however, the aromatic nuances are well intact. I recall that the previous 2016 vintage took longer to come into focus, whereas this 2017 expression is open-knit and immediately accessible. The fruit is front and center, and the wine slides over the palate with a silky texture. Managing the tannins in 2017 was not easy, but this wine proves that lasting balance is not out of reach.
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 30, 2020 This shows really beautiful purity of fruit with polish and sophistication. The currant and cassis aromas are so enticing and really reflect the name of the wine. Medium to full body. Extremely fine tannins. Shows a level of freshness and agility that caresses the palate. Delicate and beautiful. Mostly Howell Mountain. Drink or hold.JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/31/2020 The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is brilliant, with a ripe, powerful style that’s going to age gracefully. Deep blackcurrants, dark chocolate, scorched earth, and graphite notes all emerge from this concentrated, powerful Cabernet that has ripe tannins, a big, rich mid-palate, and a great finish. It’s going to benefit from 3–5 years of bottle age and keep for upwards of two decades with no issues. (Jeb Dunnuck)WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021 Thick and concentrated in dense layers of cedar, pencil shaving and currant, this reserve-worthy wine is substantial in body wight and power, with considerable oak impact, as it was aged 20 months in 80% new French oak. Still, it shows remarkable underlying beauty, complexity and structure. It is a blockbuster that will do well in the cellar. Enjoy best from 2027 through 2037. (Virginie Boone)RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Aug 2020 Composed of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve springs from the glass with notions of red and black currant jelly, baker’s chocolate, menthol and spice cake plus hints of violets, cedar and kirsch in the undercurrent. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals a firm, finely grained texture with tons of freshness backing up the generous fruit, finishing long and perfumed. 9,644 cases were made. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 Beringer’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is very pretty in 2017. Sweet red cherry, red plum, mint, licorice and floral notes all grace this super-expressive and inviting Private Reserve. As always, the Private Reserve is a blend from a number of the sites Beringer works with, based on a core of Howell Mountain vineyards. (Antonio Galloni)SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2020 Plush and forward, with creamed plum and blackberry puree flavors, carried by cocoa and warm loam notes. Everything knits nicely through the finish. A crowd-pleaser style. Drink now through 2029. 9,644 cases made. (James Molesworth)
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2021 This rich, wood-aged wine comes from 40- to 50-year-old vines on an estate at the southern limit of the Madiran appellation. It brings together dense tannins and old-vine concentration. The acidity, black-plum flavors and tannins will keep this wine developing for many years. Drink from 2023. (Roger Voss)
RP89+89+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2020 From French clones planted in the Berg Schlossberg, Berg Rottland and on flatter sites and vinified in smaller barrels, the 2017 Spätburgunder Pinot Noir offers darker-toned and intense fruit with discreet toasty and spicy notes. Lush and round but elegant and fresh on the palate, this is a medium-bodied, quite filigreed and fresh Pinot Noir, with a fine and refreshing but also intense finish with delicate acidity and very fine tannins. 12% alcohol. Tasted in August 2019.VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021 Fresh cherry is laced with kirsch distillate on a high-toned nose and a glossy, brightly juicy, piquantly pit-tinged palate. Grenadine and mineral salts add allure to an admirably clear and downright refreshing finish.
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/15/2020 Coming from the Oldfield and Boushey Vineyards (basically the same vineyard), the 2017 Syrah Motor City Kitty Oldfield-Boushey Vineyard is slightly darker colored and, as with all the Rhones here, wasn’t destemmed and was brought up in mostly neutral puncheons. Blackberries, smoked earth, game, chocolate, and chalky minerality all emerge from this beauty, and it’s a powerful, full-bodied, concentrated effort that will evolve positively for 2–4 years and keep for a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, June 1, 2020 This is deep and flavorful with spice, meat, wet earth and a light, greenish note. It’s medium-to full-bodied, lively and flavor-focused. Drink now.
