French wines and the appellations they come from are very diverse. That might be the reason why the French are currently the number one producers of wine and the number one consumers of wine.
France is blessed as both a cool-climate producer of wines in regions such as Burgundy, Champagne, Loire Valley, and Alsace where grapes like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling thrive, while the warmer ocean-influenced climate of Bordeaux allows for near perfect ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in most years. Even warmer sub-tropical influences can be tasted in the rich, extroverted, and largely Grenache-based wines of the Southern Rhone Valley such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, as well as in Provence and the Languedoc/Roussillon located near the Mediterranean Sea in Southern France.
Winemadeeasy.com has an excellent selection of French wine from inexpensive Cotes-du-Rhone and hand-selected petite Bordeaux, to highly rated wines including Chateauneuf-du-Pape and first-growth Bordeaux, and an eclectic mix in-between.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 8/1/2022 This is a fine wine, ripe with red fruits and tangy acidity. It has depth and density, a juicy character and a tight texture at the end. WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2022 This violet-scented Pinot Noir is marked by plump, mouth-drenching black-cherry and plum flavors edged by licks of sweet spice and vanilla. Framed by fine, glossy tannins and a juicy spine of acidity, this immediately welcoming wine is particularly joyous young but will likely hold well through 2027. (Anna Lee C. WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2022 Salty, mineral freshness extends from nose to finish in this ripe, broad-shouldered wine. Red-cherry and plum flavors are fleshy and concentrated on the palate, lifted by a tang of cranberry acidity and a pleasantly leafy, herbal finish. Soft in tannins and kissed with sweet spice, the wine is ready now but will likely to hold through 2029. (Anna Lee C. WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2020 Full of black fruit, this dense wine brings out the ripeness of the vintage. While the alcohol is obvious, fresh blackberry flavors mask it. JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/28/2018 The old vine cuvée is the 2017 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes, based on 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that’s brought up in older barrels. Blackberries, toasted spice, smoked earth and licorice notes all flow to a rich, powerful, concentrated Rasteau that has ripe, present tannins and a great finish. It’s certainly going to be an outstanding wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)WE8787 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2020 Densely concentrated plum and black cherry flavors are muted by savory notes of crushed earth and tobacco and in this full-bodied blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. It’s a rounded, open-knit wine that’s showing glimpses of maturity, so it’s best to enjoy now–2024. (Anna Lee C. VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022 Bright, onion-skin color. Fresh and incisive on the nose, displaying red berry, citrus fruit and floral qualities and subtle mineral and spice flourishes. Juicy and sharply focused, putting forward lithe strawberry, blood orange and honeysuckle flavors that deepen through the back half. Finishes long and silky, with the red fruit and floral notes lingering. (Josh Raynolds)WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 8/1/2022 Bright with ripe fruit, this is a juicy wine that exudes red berry flavors. It is lightly floral and attractively perfumed, which enhances the wine’s brightness. Drink now. Organic. (Roger Voss)
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2022 Initially reductive notes of scorched earth and smoke in this wine dissipate with aeration, revealing pristine yellow apple and Mirabelle. Edged by a crush of oyster shells and salty mineral tones, this invigorating sip finishes on a whisper of white pepper. The wine is just starting to open now but should drink well through 2030. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2020 Chablis Vau de Vey 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet with wild peach, light quince and flinty aromas, quite complex though I would not describe it as “intense”. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, harmonious, quite sappy towards the finish with decent length. Perhaps like the Butteaux, I would have liked a little more tension on the finish, but it should still give 8–10 years’ drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting in Chablis. (Neal Martin)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021 With oenologue Michel Rolland’s team behind this estate, it is not surprising that this wine is rich while also structured and perfumed. Wood aging gives a final polish to a full, generous and ageworthy wine. Drink from 2023.VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 The 2018 Le Doyenné is nicely done. Sweet floral notes and bright, red berry fruit give this mid-weight Côtes de Bordeaux a good deal of charm. Drink it over the next handful of years.JD8888 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/11/2021 Lots of spiced red and black fruits, cedarwood, sappy flowers, and incense notes emerge from the 2018 Château Le Doyenne, It’s a nicely balanced, medium-bodied 2018 with plenty of sweet fruit, a solid sense of freshness and purity, ripe tannins, and a clean finish. It’s rock-solid and ideal for enjoying over the coming 5–6 years, if not longer. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2021 Perfumed and with a touch of spice, this rich wine brings out a tropical side of Sauvignon Blanc. Pepper and a textured edge add essential contrast. The wine is young, so a few more months would be good. Drink from 2022.
WE9898 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2021 This Grenache is sourced from the sandy soils of two prized vineyards, La Janasse and La Crau. Redolent of rose petals, smoky tea leaves and black cherry, the deeply penetrating wine pulsates through a long, long finish. Matured 12 months in large-format wood, it’s pure in fruit and satiny on the palate. Stunning young, the wine should gain complexity through at least 2040 and hold much further still.JD96+96–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020 The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin looks to be a magical wine in the making. It has everything you could want from this region as well as from Grenache. Revealing a medium ruby/purple, almost opaque color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of kirsch liqueur, wild strawberries, loamy soil, peppery garrigue, and flowers, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, multi-dimensional texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. This is one of those incredible wines that delivers serious intensity and richness yet stays weightless and is as elegant as they come. It’s going to be approachable with just 2–3 years of bottle age yet will have 20 years or more of longevity.
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2020 On the southern slopes of the Entre-deux-Mers, this vineyard surrounds a grand 19th-century chateau. This organic wine offers rich tannins and powerful black fruits. Its structure will soften and the wine will be ready from 2021.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2021 Apart from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in this blend, everything else is uniquely Jurassien. This Crémant has touches of yeastiness and tight, tangy acidity along with orange-blossom fragrance. It is ready to drink. (Roger Voss)
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2021 This rich, wood-aged wine comes from 40- to 50-year-old vines on an estate at the southern limit of the Madiran appellation. It brings together dense tannins and old-vine concentration. The acidity, black-plum flavors and tannins will keep this wine developing for many years. Drink from 2023. (Roger Voss)
